1999 OSU Football Postgame Notes
vs. Mississippi State, Sept. 18, 1999
- Mississippi State?s first touchdown of the game, which came with 38 seconds remaining in the first half, was the first against OSU?s defense since the first quarter of last year?s season finale against Baylor. The Cowboys went 11 straight quarters without allowing an offensive touchdown (Louisiana-Lafayette scored on an interception return in the opener), the best such streak since the 1945 season, when the Cowboys again went 11 periods without allowing an opposing offense in the end zone. The streaks are the longest on record since consistent play-by-play sheets are available in the mid-1940s. Before that time, OSU had a handful of back-to-back-to-back shutouts, most recently in 1930.
- Dontae Walker?s second-quarter touchdown run covered 57 yards, making it the longest scoring run by an OSU opponent since Byron Hanspard of Texas Tech went 72 yards for a score in 1996.
- Senior PK Tim Sydnes has hit at least one field goal in 10 straight games. However, today?s game marked the first time since the Missouri game in 1996, when he missed 52- and 55-yarders, that he has missed two FGs in a game.
- Senior DB Alvin Porter?s third-quarter interception was the first of his career. He followed it with a second in the fourth quarter.
- With 166 yards in punt returns through three games, senior WR Terance Richardson is on pace to break the school record set two years ago by current San Francisco 49er R.W. McQuarters.
- Senior DT Cortney Mallory rumbled for a 46-yard interception-return touchdown in the fourth quarter. It was the first interception and the first touchdown of his career. It was OSU?s first interception return for a touchdown since Troy West returned a Kansas pick 40 yards for a score in last year?s season opener. In the last two games, OSU?s defense has recorded a fumble recovery for a score, an interception return for a score and a safety.
- Senior LB Raymond Cato?s fourth-quarter interception was his first this season and the second of his career (he had one INT in 1996), and it was OSU?s fifth pick in the past two games.
- The last time OSU?s offense went without a touchdown in a game was last year?s 17-6 loss at home against Texas A&M on Oct. 31.
- The Cowboys fumbled eight times today, losing five. Records at hand indicate that the Cowboys have not fumbled or lost as many bobbles in a single game since at least 1984. OSU turned the ball over six times, the most since the Cowboys lost five interceptions and three fumbles in a 28-0 loss to Colorado in 1992.
- OSU has never won a road game against a team that was an SEC member at the time of the game, today?s game was just the third such contest in the Cowboys? history.
- The loss snaps OSU?s four-game losing streak, which dated to the final two games of 1998.
