September 29, 1999 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
Sept. 29, 1999
STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State men's and women's cross country teams will stay home this weekend to host the 63rd annual Cowboy Jamboree on Saturday at the OSU Cross Country Course.
The Cowboy Jamboree is one of the nation's longest-running meets of its kind. The first meet was held in 1937. However, between 1940-45, the Cowboy Jamboree was put on hold because of World War II.
Many of the top teams in the country travel to Stillwater every year to compete in the Cowboy Jamboree. This year, there are 61 collegiate teams and 65 high school teams scheduled to run. If all of the teams compete, there will be more than 3,000 participants at the meet, making it the largest meet ever in Oklahoma.
On the men's side, first-ranked Arkansas will compete, along with fellow Big 12 members Baylor, Oklahoma and Texas Tech. Also, the second-ranked NCAA Division II Abilene Christian team and No. 2 NAIA Adams State will participate. The Cowboys enter the meet ranked No. 23.
For the women, No. 8 Baylor is the top-ranked team coming to the meet, and Adams State is one of the top teams from the NCAA Division II coming.
The all-day meet features races ranging from NCAA Division I to junior colleges to high school.
The first race will begin at 8:05 a.m. with the college/junior college women's 5-kilometer run. At 8:30 a.m., the college/junior college men will run in an 8km race.
The Cowgirls will be competitors in the university women's 5km run, beginning at 9:10 a.m. The Cowboys will participate in the university men's 8km race, scheduled to start at 9:40 a.m. The high school races will follow afterwards.
