Howell, Hultman Finish In Top 10 At Ping-Golfweek Preview

OPELIKA, Ala. -- Charles Howell and Anders Hultman began the 1999-2000 golf season just as they opened the 1998-99 campaign -- with top-10 finishes in the nation's most prestigious season-opening event.
Howell and Hultman finished tied for sixth Tuesday at the Ping-Golfweek Preview Invitational at the Grand National Lake Course near Auburn, Ala., one year after earning first- and ninth-place honors at the same event to open the past season. The significance of the Cowboys' performance is obvious: Grand National is also the site of the 2000 NCAA Championship.
Howell carded a 4-under-par 68 Tuesday to move up 17 spots for his sixth-place position. Hultman recorded a 1-over 73 in the final round after his Monday 68 vaulted him into the top 10. The duo finished 2-under-par for the tournament, six strokes behind champion Luke Donald of Northwestern
As a team, OSU finished tied for fifth with Georgia at 4-over-par for the tournament after turning in a 7-under 281, the best team score of Tuesday's final round. Northwestern overtook first- and second-round leader Clemson for the team championship and finished at 16-under. The Tigers finished second at 8-under, with Arizona State (1-under) and Georgia Tech (even) finishing third and fourth.
Individually, Edward Loar joined Howell in posting a 68 Tuesday. Loar recovered from a second-round 79 to finish 26th at 4-over-par 220. True freshman J.C. DeLeon finished his collegiate debut 44th at 223, and senior Landry Mahan was 61st at 228 after bouncing back from a first-round 77 and a second-round 79 to score even par on the final day.
OSU returns to action Oct. 11-12 when it competes in the Red River Classic in Dallas, Texas.
