STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State begins the quest for its ninth national-championship season when the OSU men's golf team competes at the Ping-Golfweek Preview in Auburn, Ala., this weekend.
The Cowboys' lineup is still undetermined, but the five-man team will be chosen from true freshman J.C. DeLeon, junior Charles Howell, sophomore Anders Hultman, senior Edward Loar, redshirt freshman Billy Lowry and senior Landry Mahan. Howell is ranked sixth in the preseason MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings, and Loar is ninth.
The Cowboys won this event in 1998, riding Howell's individual title and ninth-place finishes from Hultman and Loar.
The top six ranked schools in the nation are in the field for the 1999 Preview, which will be played at Grand National Lake Course, the site of the 2000 NCAA Men's Golf Championship, on Sunday through Tuesday. Clemson is the top-ranked team in the preseason rankings and is followed by No. 2 Arizona State, No. 3 OSU, No. 4 UNLV, No. 5 Georgia Tech and No. 6 Georgia, the defending NCAA Champion.
Individually, 1999 U.S. Amateur Champion David Gossett of Texas is in the field, as well as defending NCAA Champion Luke Donald of Northwestern and 1997 U.S. Amateur Champion Matt Kuchar of Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech's Bryce Molder, the 1998 College Player of the Year, is in the field as well as Minnesota's James McLean, the 1998 NCAA Champion. Gossett, Kuchar, Molder and Loar are all members of the U.S. Walker Cup team, and Donald played for the Great Britain/Ireland Walker Cup team that faced the U.S. last week.
