SYDNEY, Australia - Oklahoma State's Tony Gansen just missed the medal round of the 1999 FILA Junior World Freestyle Wrestling Championships on Saturday.
Gansen was eliminated from medal contention at 167.5 pounds. Although he defeated G. Szabo of Hungary, 5-3, his 1-1 overall record wasn't enough to qualify for the quarterfinals.
He suffered a 7-2 loss to Russian A. Djeriev in his opening round match.
The United States as a team finished third with 43 points. Russia won the team title with 60 points, followed by Iran with 56 points. All four teams were in contention going into the final day.
The U.S. had only one medalist in the tournament, gold-medalist T.J. Hill at 110 pounds. However, it was a strong team effort, as eight of the nine wrestlers placed in the top 10 of the their weight classes and scored points for the U. S. team.
