WINNIPEG, Canada - Former Oklahoma State wrestler Eric Guerrero advanced to the gold-medal finals of the Pan American Games here today.
Guerrero finished his wrestling career at OSU earlier this spring with his third NCAA Championship.
After his first two days of international competition, his 5-1 record has earned him a spot in the finals, which will take place tonight at 7 p.m.
Guerrero, who is wrestling at 127.75 pounds, locked up a cradle and pinned David Ortiz of Venezuela in 1:57 in the semifinal match, which earned him a spot in the gold-medal round.
He will face 1996 Olympic silver medalist Giuvi Sissaouri of Canada in the championship match. It will be a rematch of a preliminary round, won by Sissauori, 6-3.
Guerrero won 4-of-5 matches yesterday during the first day of competition. Guerrero won two matches during the session by technical fall, beating Edgar Castillo of Panama, 11-0 and Edgar Ramirez of Guatemala, 10-0.
Oklahoma State head coach John Smith leads the United States squad, which has locked up seven berths in the gold-medal finals.
Guerrero's performance, as well as that of former OSU softball player Michele Smith, can be tracked at the official Pan American Games web site.
