Men's Golf Shoots 9-over-par after Round One
June 21, 1999 | Cowboy Golf
May 20, 1999
COLUMBUS, Ohio. - For the second straight season, the Oklahoma State men's golf team finds itself in early danger of seeing its NCAA Tournament streak come to an end.
The Cowboys are in a three-way tie for ninth place after one round of the Central Regional; the top 10 teams in regional play qualify for the NCAA Championship, to be held June 2-5 in Chasica, Minn. OSU shot 9-over-par as a team on the par-72 Scarlet Course and are 14 strokes out of the lead -- but just nine out of second -- and tied with Illinois and North Texas.
In 1998, OSU was 12th after one round and tied for 10th after two rounds at the regional tournament, but the Cowboys finished seventh and went on to a fourth-place showing at their 52nd consecutive NCAA Championship appearance.
OSU was led Thursday by Charles Howell and Landry Mahan, who carded 1-over-par 73s to tie for 28th place, six strokes out of the individual lead. Anders Hultman is 57th with a 75 today; Peter Davidson recorded a 76 and is 67th; and Edward Loar is 85th with a 78.
The tournament continues with 18-hole rounds Friday and Saturday.
