Men's Golf Opens Season with Victory
June 21, 1999 | Cowboy Golf
September 29, 1998
STILLWATER, Okla. - Led by medalist Charles Howell, the fifth-ranked Oklahoma State men's golf team opened its 1998-99 season with a victory today at the Ping-Golfweek Preview Invitational at Hazeltine National Golf Club.
Last season, the Cowboys went winless throughout their first 10 tournaments before finally earning their first team title at the Big 12 Championship. But this season, OSU bounced back from a six-stroke deficit after the first round and a two-stroke deficit after the second round to earn the victory.
Howell earned the first individual title of his career despite a third-round 74. A sophomore who led OSU in top-10 finishes a year ago, Howell carded an even-par 216 to win medalist honors by one stroke. He was joined in the individual top 10 by teammates Anders Hultman, a freshman playing in his first collegiate tourney, and two-time All-American junior Edward Loar. Hultman and Loar tied for ninth with five-over-par 221s.
Junior Landry Mahan finished tied for 16th with a 54-hole score of 223, and sophomore Peter Davidson finished 49th at 233.
The Cowboys will return to action Oct. 12 and 13, when they compete in the Red River Classic in Dallas.
