Wrestling Finishes Second at Big 12 Championships

AMES, Iowa - Wrestling with only nine wrestlers, Oklahoma State placed second at the Big 12 Championships Saturday in Ames, Iowa.
Oklahoma won the tournament with a score of 82.5 points. The Cowboys ended up with 76 points. Iowa State was third with 64. Nebraska was fourth with 57.5. Missouri finished the tournament with six points.
En route to their runner-up finish the Cowboys crowned three champions: Eric Guerrero, Reggie Wright and Mark Smith.
Eric Guerrero won his first Big 12 title of his illustrious career with a 5-3 win over third-ranked Cody Sanderson of Iowa State. Guerrero is undefeated on the season at 26-0.
Reggie Wright won his first Big 12 crown with a second-period fall over Jared Frayer of Oklahoma at 149-pounds. It was his second fall over Frayer this season.
Smith won his title with a 10-2 pounding of OU freshman Michael Barger. It was his third straight Big 12 title.
Teague Moore dropped a 5-3 overtime decision to Shane Valdez of Oklahoma in the finals. It was the third straight year the two had met in the conference finals, with Moore winning the previous two.
Ty Wilcox, who upset fourth-ranked Rod Jones in the semifinals, lost a tough 6-3 decision to top-ranked and undefeated Joe Heskett of Iowa State. Wilcox went into the tournament unranked.
Charles Walker (141), Mark Mu-oz (184) and Dave Anderton (285) all finished third for the Cowboys and Josh Cruzan (197) placed fifth. Jimmy Arias injury defaulted but did receive a wildcard to the NCAAs. The Cowboys will send only nine wrestlers to the NCAAs as Cruzan Finals
The Cowboys will next be in action March 18-20 at the NCAA Tournament in State College, Penn.
