The Cowboys - Oklahoma State is the winningest program in the nation, in any sport. No other team compares as far as winning percentage and national team titles. The Cowboys are in their 80th season as a collegiate program and have amassed a 792-81-19 record. The Cowboys have also had 78 wrestlers win 119 individual titles, including two Cowboys that are on the current team. As ironic as it sounds the Cowboys have a losing record to one team in the nation in career match-ups and that is Illinois. The Fightin' Illini defeated the Cowboys in 1993, a year when the Cowboys redshirted most of their front line starters because of NCAA sanctions, and hold a 1-0 advantage over the Cowboys. The only other team the Cowboys don't hold an advantage over is Iowa. The two storied programs are tied in their series at 15-15-1.
In The Polls - The Cowboys open the season ranked No. 1 by both Intermat and Amateur Wrestling News. It is the third straight year that the Cowboys open the season at No. 1.
The Series - The Cowboys come into the OU dual with a 103-24-8 advantage in the historic bedlam series. The Pokes have won the previous five meetings between the two, including a 26-9 triumph in Stillwater in their last meeting. (See results from the previous match between the two schools later in the notes).
Boomer Sooner - The Sooners come into the dual ranked 5th in the nation in both polls. They are led by sixth year head coach Jack Spates. The Sooners will send some familiar faces to the mat when the two teams hook it up on Sunday. Shane and Dane Valdez both come into their senior seasons for the Sooners. Michael Lightner, who is ranked second at 141 pounds, is in his second season as the Sooners starter. David Kjeldgaard will move up a weight this season to 157 but is still a formidable foe for Jimmy Arias. Rod Jones will wrestle at 165 for the Sooners. John Henry Ward will be the heavyweight. Ward's father was an All-American at OSU. New to this thing we call Bedlam will be Jared Frayer at 149, Keith Wilson at 174, and Waymon May at 197.
Looking Back - Oklahoma State opened the season with a pair of wins to extend its dual winning streak to 47. Dave Anderton brought the Cowboys back from a 17-11 deficit with a fall in the second period. Eric Guerrero pulled off a technical fall, his second on the season. Against Wisconsin Teague Moore, Eric Guerrero and Jimmy Arias all picked up bonus point wins for the Cowboys. Moore picked up the first fall of the season for the Pokes.
Go West Young Man - The Cowboys will take off next week and will have 12 days off after the OU dual. The Cowboys will next be in action Dec. 18 when they wrestle at Cal Poly-SLO at 2 p.m. and Fresno State at 7 p.m. They will also be in the Reno Duals on Dec. 20. That meet will be a tough challenge for the Cowboys as they will wrestle three duals and will likely face some stiff competition. Ranked teams that are scheduled to compete in the Reno Duals are: Arizona State Cal State-Bakersfield, Nebraska, Purdue and Central Michigan.
Pin 'Em - Transfer heavyweight Dave Anderton is off to an impressive debut season. He has recorded four falls in his first seven matches, including a big fall to bring the Cowboys from behind to beat Minnesota. He had three falls in the St. Louis Open including one in 17 seconds. Equally impressive is Eric Guerrero's two technical falls in his two matches.
It Could Happen - Eric Guerreo is looking to become OSU's 13th three-time NCAA Champion this season. He is also looking to become the seventh four-time All-American. Teague Moore looks to become the Cowboys 31st wrestler with two or more individual national championships. Moore and Mark Smith look to become No. 52 and 53 on the Cowboys three-time All-American charts.
Guerrero Named Hodge Award Finalist - Eric Guerrero has been named a finalist for the Dan Hodge Award. The award is given to the Most Outstanding wrestler in the nation. Stephen Neal of Cal State-Bakersfield and Tim Hartung of Minnesota are other finalist for the award. Guerrero is a two-time NCAA champion and a three-time All-American.
The Streak - A little bit about the Cowboys current 47-dual winning streak. The streak is the third longest streak in school history behind 76 and 70 match skeins. The Cowboys have the longest current streak in any sport. The Pokes have won 37 straight duals on the road and 12 straight over Big 10 Conference foes. In the current streak 32 of the 46 teams were ranked at the time of the dual.
The Schedule - The Cowboys have one of the toughest schedule in the nation. They open the season in hostile Big 10 territory against Wisconsin and Minnesota. They also have several duals against other ranked opponents including Iowa, Oklahoma (twice), Iowa State and possible showdowns with several top opponents at the Reno Duals and the National Duals. Oklahoma State will also host the NWCA All-Star Dual February 1 in Stillwater.
John Smith - The most decorated wrestler in U.S.A. history returns for his seventh season at the helm of the Cowboys. Smith has posted an 86-14-2 record as the Cowboys' skipper. He also has coached the U.S. National Team in a couple of major international events. He first coached Team USA to a gold medal at the Goodwill Games in New York this past summer. He then took the Americans to Tehran, Iran, for the World Championships where the Red, White and Blue took home a bronze. The trip to Iran was the first time in almost 20 years an American flag had flown in Iran. As a wrestler Smith won six world titles, two Olympic titles and two NCAA crowns.
Teague Moore (125) - Opened the season with a fall over Kevin Black of Wisconsin. Moore is coming off a national title season. He won last seasons title with a fall over previously unbeaten David Morgan of Michigan State. He is a two-time All-American. He is ranked No.1 in both polls (Intermat & Amateur Wrestling News). 1999: 2-0; OSU Career 79-21; Rank 1/1
Eric Guerrero (133) - Both of his wins this season have ended in technical falls. Two-time defending national champion. He looks to become the seventh four-time All-American in school history and the 13th three-time national-champion the history of the school. He won his national title last season with a win over Wisconsin's Eric Jetton. Comes into the season ranked No. 1 in both polls. 1999: 2-0; OSU Career 82-13; Rank 1/1
Jamill Kelly (141) - Enters his second season as a starter for the Pokes after transferring from Lassen Junior College. He did not place at the NCAA's in his first season but should this year. Split his dual matches over the weekend. Beat Michael Lightner last season.1999: 1-1; OSU Career 25-9; Rank 8/8
Reggie Wright (149) - Won his first two matches as a Cowboy. He won a tough 7-4 decision over Troy Marr of Minnesota. He is a transfer from Lassen Junior College and comes into the season ranked 11th. Place fourth at the Espoir Worlds this past summer; he was a Espoir National Champion as well.1999: 2-0; OSU Career 2-0; Rank 10/NR
Jimmy Arias (157) - One of four four-year starters for the Cowboys. Lost a 3-1 overtime match to Chad Kraft of Minnesota. He comes into the season ranked third, after a seventh-place finish in the tough 150-pound weight class a year ago. Has the ability to win it all for the Pokes this season. 1999: 1-1; OSU Career 62-31; Rank 3/4
Shawn Smith (165) - Unorthodox wrestler who upset favorite Ty Wilcox in the ranking matches. Lost to No. 2 Do Pritzlaff in the Wisconsin Dual. In case you were wondering, he is not related to the wrestling Smith family. He is 2-0 in duals in his career as a back-up. 1999: 2-3; OSU Career 22-10; Rank NR/NR
Ty Wilcox (165) - Was the favorite coming into the season at 165. He did defeat Smith in the St. Louis Open and the two are expected to share time this season for the Cowboys. He is only a redshirt freshman. 1999: 3-3; OSU Career 11-4; Rank NR/NR
Mark Smith (174) - Opened the season with an overtime, tiebreaker win over Kole Clauson of Wisconsin. Has yet to score a takedown this season. He has finished fourth the last two seasons. However, he comes into the season ranked No. 1 in a relatively thin weight. He is the brother of OSU head coach John Smith and assistant coach Pat Smith. 1999: 2-0; OSU Career 61-18; Rank 1/1
Mark Muoz (184) - Begins his second season as the Cowboys starter after a good freshman season. Lost to No. 1/2 Brandon Eggum in the Minnesota dual. He is ranked seventh at 184 and this could be his break-out season. 1998: 1-1; OSU Career 39-14; Rank 9/7
Pat Popolizio (197) - Begins his third year as a starter for the Cowboys. He has yet to place at the nationals but this could be the year. He Moore and Guerrero are the only three Cowboys who have not used up their redshirt season. 1999: 1-1; OSU Career 35-20; Rank 13/10
Dave Anderton (HWT) - Brought the Cowboys from behind to win the Minnesota dual with a second period fall. He already has four falls on the season. Transfer from Ricks Junior College in Idaho. He will be one of the bigger heavyweights in the nation this year. He is a junior in eligibility. 1999 5-2; OSU Career 5-2; Rank NR/NR
