Sloan Wins Steeplechase, Sets New School Record

STANFORD, Calif. - Oklahoma State's Chuck Sloan won the 3,000-meter steeplechase while setting a new school record at the Cardinal Invitational here late Friday night.
Sloan finished the race in 8:37.06, setting a new personal best mark and breaking the old school record of 8:38.20 set in 1967. That time gives him the second-best finish in the nation. Unattached runner Ray Hughes finished behind Sloan in 8:38.23.
Andrew Hennessy crossed the line in third with a time of 8:39.71 in the event, also setting a new personal record. His time ranks as the fifth-best in the nation. Both athletes reached their goal of the automatic qualifying time of 8:43.00.
Brian Young and Gitogo Churu provisionally qualified in their respective events.
Young finished the 1,500m in 13th with a time of 3:44.23. He needed to finish in under 3:45.00 to receive a provisionally qualifying bid. His time is the 19th-best time in the nation heading into the weekend.
Churu finished 19th in the 5,000m with a time of 14:09.18. He is the second Cowboy to reach the provisional mark of 14:10.00 in the 5,000m.
Six Cowboys now have qualified for the NCAA Championships in four events, including four automatic qualifications. Several other Cowboys are within striking distance of qualifying times.
OSU will take next weekend off to prepare for the Big 12 Championships on May 21-23 in Waco, Texas.
