WACO, Texas - Chuck Sloan completed his repeat bid as the Big 12 champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as he led Oklahoma State's men's track team to an 11th-place finish at the Big 12 Championships here today.
Although the race wasn't as close as last year's, Sloan needed a last-minute push to pull off the win in 8:57.14. Colorado's Tom Reese finished second in 8:57.33.
"He really scared me," OSU coach Dick Weis said. "He was watching the Colorado kid (Reese) and not the last hurdle. He hit the hurdle and staggered, while the Colorado kid took off. Chuck dug down and outsprinted him over the last 70 meters."
Last year Sloan came from behind to edge Missouri's Ray Hughes for the title. Both runners finished the race with the same time, 8:52.30, but Sloan was awarded first after looking at the photo finish.
Jerry Rainey added another point to the Cowboys' tally as he finished the steeplechase in eight place with a time of 9:31.31.
Nathaniel Lane fell short of winning his second title of the 1999 meet as he finished second in the 5,000m run with a time of 14:25.80. On Friday, Lane won the 10,000m run.
Rene Carlsen finished the 5,000m in 10th place with a time of 14:52.19, while Gitogo Churu placed 12th in 14:54.39. Bruce Wright crossed the line in 15th with a time of 15:10.98. Colorado's Ron Roybal won the event in a time of 14:23.13.
Andrew Hennessy finished third in the 1,500m run with a time of 3:48.14. Brian Young finished 10th in 3:56.06. Kansas' Charlie Gruber won the event with a time of 3:46.92.
The Cowboys' 41 points were good enough for 11th place, an improvement over last year's 12th-place finish at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships.
OSU will now get ready for the NCAA Championships on June 2-5 in Boise, Idaho.
