STILLWATER, Okla. - Sophomore Oklahoma State distance runner Chuck Sloan will close out his 1998 outdoor track and field season this weekend as he represents the Cowboys at the 1998 USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships in New Orleans, La. at the Tad Gomley Stadium.
Sloan qualified for the event, meeting the required standard of 8:44.60 with his 8:42.04 Penn Relays performance on April 24.
The sophomore will set his goals on qualifying for the events finals as he tries to break the school's 31 year old school record of 8:38.20 by Cowboy All-America Chris McCubbins at the Pan American Games in Winipeg, Canada in 1967.
Five-time champion and four-time defending champion Marc Croghan of Adidas won the event in Indianapolis, Ind. in 1997 with a time of 8:20.86.
The USA steeplechase meet record of 8:18.35 is held by Henry Marsh, set in Indianapolis, Ind. in 1985 while representing Athletics West.
Sloan will be aiming on being the second USA steeplechase champion in the school's history behind Oklahoma State's first All-American Forrest Efaw (1941).
The event semifinals are scheduled for Friday June 19 at 9:20 p.m. while the finals are set for 1:30 p.m. Sunday June 21.
