Shawn Smith Upsets Ty Wilcox at Orange-Black Ranking Match

STILLWATER, Okla. - Shawn Smith pulled off the only major upset of the Orange-Black ranking matches for the Oklahoma State wrestling team Tuesday evening at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater.
Smith, a junior from Chippewa Falls, defeated heavily favored Ty Wilcox to earn the starting nod at 165 pounds for the Cowboys.
Mark Smith earned his right to start with a fall over Meville Hedges. Mark Munoz won his tilt with Tim Moore by technical fall, 21-6. Pat Popolizio earned the starting nod for the third straight year with a 8-3 win over Todd Munson. Dave Anderton, a junior college transfer, won his bout with Josh Cruzan, 6-2.
"I was a little bit surprised at a couple weights (165 and 149)," said OSU head coach John Smith. "The one very encouraging thing I did see was our conditioning."
Teague Moore at 125 and Eric Guerrero at 133, both had easy matches. Moore major decisioned Matt Holman, 13-0 and Guerrero pinned Beau Vest in 2:36. Jamill Kelly earned the starting spot for the second straight year with a win over Charles Walker, 3-2.
Reggie Wright, a junior college transfer, won the 149-pound starting nod and Jimmy Arias earned his fourth starting nod for the Cowboys at 157.
