STILLWATER, Okla. - A Thanksgiving weekend date with Oklahoma and six attractive home games highlight the 1999 Oklahoma State football schedule, released today.
The Cowboys will open the season on Sept. 4 in Stillwater against Southwestern Louisiana and finish the regular season on Nov. 27 in Norman against Oklahoma. It will mark the first time since 1985 the Cowboys have ended the regular season against their in-state rivals.
Oklahoma State's other home games include Tulsa, Texas Tech, Kansas State, Texas and Kansas.
Six of OSU's 1999 opponents are headed for bowl games this season, including Mississippi State which will face Texas in the Cotton Bowl. OSU will play at Starkville on Sept. 18. The Cowboys defeated MSU in Stillwater in 1998 before the Bulldogs went on to earn a berth in the SEC title game against Tennessee.
In announcing the schedule, OSU Athletic Director Terry Don Phillips said he was delighted the game with Oklahoma could be moved to the Saturday after Thanksgiving. "We are really pleased that OU worked so hard to arrange its schedule in a way that will allow this game to be played on rivalry weekend. It will be great for our fans, great for television and will serve to further enhance the game."
After the Pokes open with back-to-back home games against USL and Tulsa, the slate features six straight games against 1998 bowl teams. The 1999 schedule has the Cowboys at home four of the first six weeks.
Both Kansas State and Kansas will be making appearances on Lewis Field for the first time since 1995. The Cowboys will play at Nebraska for the first time under head coach Bob Simmons. OSU hasn't played in Lincoln since 1994.
The Cowboys will have two open dates, the first on Sept. 25 prior to the league opener at Nebraska. The second open date is on Oct. 16 and sandwiched between home dates against Texas Tech and Kansas State.
