OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Nebraska junior hurler Chad Wiles pitched a complete game one hitter to lead the Cornhuskers to a 5-0 win over Oklahoma State in the first round of the Big 12 tournament Wednesday afternoon at the Bricktown Ballpark.
Carlos Gautreaux recorded the Pokes only hit in the fifth inning as Wiles struck out four and walked four to improve to 5-1 on the season.
"He (Wiles) threw strikes and came at us up there. You kind of write those outings off. Obviously he pitched pretty well to be moved into the one hole. He has great composure; so many times we had a 2-0 pitch and instead of giving us a fastball, head give us a 2-0 change or low cutter," said Oklahoma State head man Tom Holliday.
Cowboy starter Matt Smith (9-4) lasted only four and a third innings and gave up five runs off of eight hits before being relieved by Ryan Herrmann. The freshman from Chandler, Okla., pitched four and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief and limited the Cornhuskers to just two hits the rest of the game.
The loss marked the second time this season OSU was shutout. The first was a 1-0 one-hit defeat to Oregon State on Feb. 18 in San Diego, Calif. In addition Nebraska snapped a nine-game conference tournament losing streak to OSU dating back to the 1981 Big Eight tourney.
The Cowboys will meet No. 1 seed Texas A&M in an elimination game tommorrow at 10 a.m. The Aggies lost to Oklahoma 10-5 to open the tournament Wednesday morning.
