STILLWATER, Okla. - The seventh-ranked OSU men's golf team will try to repeat its 1996 and '97 success when it competes Saturday and Sunday in the Maxwell at Dornick Hills Country Club in Ardmore, Okla.
The Cowboys won the event the past two years, running away with the 1997 title by 13 strokes as current sophomore Edward Loar carded a 5-under score of 205 to take home medalist honors.
All but one of the 13 teams in the field are ranked in the latest MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings top 50, including fifth-ranked Georgia, No. 7 OSU, No. 8 Houston and No. 9 South Carolina. Six of the nation's top 20 individuals will be in action as well, including seventh-ranked Brad Elder of Texas and 10th-ranked Loar.
Three other OSU players are ranked among the nation's top 100 players. Freshman Charles Howell is 15th, senior Bo Van Pelt is 25th and sophomore Landry Mahan is 92nd.
The Cowboys will try to continue a consistently sucessful season that has seen them finish first, second or third in all but two of their 11 events this season.
The Maxwell is OSU's final tuneup before it begins NCAA Championship competition. The NCAA Central Regional will be held in San Antonio on May 14-16; the top 10 teams from that tournament will advance to the NCAA Championship in Albuquerque, N.M., on May 27-30.
