ALBUQUERQUE - Oklahoma State shot its second double-figure under-par round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, but the Cowboys were only able to make up one spot in the team standings.
OSU carded a 10-under score of 278 for the second time in the tournament, but second-round leader UNLV shot 13-under to extend its lead to 10 strokes over second-place Clemson and 13 over the Cowboys, who have a 54-hole score of 842 (22-under).
Sophomore Edward Loar is OSUs individual leader after carding a six-under 66 Friday, moving him into eighth place individually, four strokes off the pace set by James McLean of Minnesota and Charles Warren of Clemson. Senior Bo Van Pelt, who was in seventh place entering the third round, shot 33 on the front nine but 41 on the back and slipped to 17th place at 211.
OSU needs to shoot just 297, nine-over, in Saturday's final round to set a school record for best NCAA Tournament score. The previous mark of 1140 was set in 1994 (when OSU finished fifth) and in the championship year of 1978. Loar's 66 ties for the second-best individual round by an OSU player in an NCAA Tournament; Trip Kuehne shot 65 in the 1994 championship.
Freshman Charles Howell recorded a round of 70, duplicating his first-round score, and is 36th individually at 214. Fellow frosh Boyd Summerhays' even-par round Friday has him in 62nd place at 219, and sophomore Landry Mahan shot an NCAA Tournament career-best 70 to move into 67th place, one stroke behind Summerhays.
The tournament concludes with one round Saturday. OSU will play in the final group with UNLV and Clemson, teeing off between 9 and 9:45 a.m.
