April 4, 1998
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Freshman Charles Howell's hot streak continued Friday and Saturday as he took a two-shot lead into Sunday's final round of the U.S. Collegiate Golf Championship at the Slammer and the Squire Course at the World Golf Village.
Howell, who has finished in the top 10 in all three of OSU's tournaments this spring, fired a career-best 66 to take a three-shot lead after Friday's first round, and although he shot a 73 Saturday to stand at 5-under-par 139, no other golfer was able to break 70. UNLV's Charley Hoffman is second at 141.
The Cowboys are in third place at 10-over as a team after Saturday's 9-over-par score of 297 dropped them one spot. Florida State leads the Championship at 2-over, and UNLV is second, two strokes ahead of the Cowboys.
Senior Bo Van Pelt, ranked 36th in the nation, is tied for 10th place at 1-over 145. Seventh-ranked sophomore Edward Loar also cracked the top 20, holding down 18th place at 3-over. Freshman Boyd Summerhays (tied for 44th at 155) and sophomore Landry Mahan (tied for 47th at 157) rounded out the Cowboys' lineup.
The tournament concludes with 18 holes Sunday. ESPN will televise the final round from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. CDT.
