Men's Golf in Fourth after NCAA Second Round
June 21, 1999 | Cowboy Golf
Senior Bo Van Pelt, however, carded his best round of the year, a 67, to move up 14 spots to seventh place. Unfortunately for OSU, Van Pelt's was the Cowboys' only under-par individual score in the round. Sophomore Edward Loar shot even par to remain at four-under; freshman Charles Howell shot 74 and is at even for the tournament; freshman Boyd Summerhays is at three-over after a 77 Thursday; and sophomore Landry Mahan shot 73 to stand at six-over.
"We squandered a wonderful opportunity this morning, because the conditions were absolutely perfect," said OSU coach Mike Holder. "This should have been moving day. We got a 67 out of Bo, but unfortunately we couldn't put anything with that. We've taken a considerable backward step relative to the field. We're just thankful that we have 36 holes left. As long as there's holes left, there's always hope."
For UNLV, it was moving day. The Rebels shot a remarkable 20-under on the front nine, and although they shot one-over on the back, UNLV took a five-shot lead at 23-under, easily the best 36-hole score in NCAA Tournament history. In fact, OSU's 12-under team score would break the previous record, but in this tournaments extremely low scores, its good only for a tie for fourth.
Georgia Tech, which shot 11-under Thursday, is in second place at 18-under, and Clemson is three shots behind the Yellowjackets. OSU and UCLA are tied for fourth at 12-under 564.
The good news for the Cowboys was that they continued their string of making NCAA Tournament cuts. Since the tournament began cutting the field after two rounds in 1971, OSU has never missed the cut.
The championship concludes with 18-hole rounds Friday and Saturday. OSU is looking for its ninth NCAA Championship and the school's third in the 1990s.
