SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Edward Loar and Bo Van Pelt carded under-par rounds, but the seventh-ranked OSU men's golf team is in 12th place after one round of the NCAA Central Regional.
Despite an unsuccessful first round that saw three OSU players shoot 4-over-par or worse, the Cowboys are just 10 strokes out of first place in the tournament played at Oak Hills Country Club. The top 10 teams and two individuals in the regional qualify for the NCAA Championship May 27-30 at The Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M.
Loar's 2-under opening round left him tied for sixth place, two strokes behind Oklahoma's Hunter Haas. Van Pelt, who has finished in the top 10 of the past two Central Regionals, is tied for 12th place, one stroke behind Loar.
Boyd Summerhays (68th, 4-over), Landry Mahan (99th, plus-7) and Charles Howell (104th, plus-8) will try to improve in the final two rounds to help the Cowboys, who won the regional in 1996 and '97, to qualify for the NCAA Championship for the 52nd consecutive year.
The regional continues with 18 holes Saturday and 18 holes Sunday.
