June 21, 1999 | Cowboy Golf
October 19, 1998
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Edward Loar continued his string of success at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, but the top-ranked OSU men's golf team is in seventh place after the tournament's first two rounds.
Loar, who won the tourney as a freshman and finished third in his sophomore season a year ago, is in sixth place with a 2-under-par score of 140 to lead the Cowboys. Teammate Charles Howell was third after today's first-round 69 but dropped to 17th after a 2-over-par 73 in the second round.
The Cowboys were in third place after this morning's round after carding an even-par team score of 284. But a second-round 289, the second-highest score of any team this afternoon, dropped the Cowboys four slots. They trail the tournament leader, Clemson, by 22 strokes.
Junior Landry Mahan (tied for 27th with a 3-over-par 145), sophomore Peter Davison (32nd, 146) and freshman Anders Hultman (38th, 147) round out the OSU lineup.
The tournament concludes with 18 holes Tuesday.
