May 30, 1998
ALBUQUERQUE - Oklahoma State recorded its 36th top-four finish in school history at this year's NCAA Mens Golf Championship.
The Cowboys recorded a school-record score of 25-under-par 1127 but finished nine strokes behind UNLV, which won its first NCAA Championship with an NCAA-record score of 1118, 34-under. Clemson finished second at 1121, and Georgia Tech was third at 1122.
Sophomore Edward Loar (tied for 15th at seven-under-par 281), senior Bo Van Pelt (19th, 282) and freshman Charles Howell (tied for 20th, 283) all finished the tournament under par individually, and all three recorded individual scores that rank among OSU's top 10 NCAA Championship performances.
Sophomore Landry Mahan carded his second straight 70 to finish tied for 48th at 290; freshman Boyd Summerhays, who leaves June 10 for a two-year mission in Argentina, finished his first NCAA Championship in 74th place at 296.
The Cowboys finished among the nation's top five teams for the 43rd time in the school's 52-year NCAA Tournament history.
UNLV, Clemson, Georgia Tech and OSU all recorded team scores lower than the previous NCAA Tournament record. The previous record was 1129, set in 1992 by Arizona (in a tournament also played here at the UNM Championship Course) and in 1994 by Stanford.
Howell closed out his freshman season with a round of 69, his team-leading 11th round in the 60s this season. He also became the second true freshman in school history to lead the team in stroke average (72.10); Loar had become the first last season with an average of 72.13.
