SAN ANTONIO - The seventh-ranked OSU men's golf team moved up three spots Saturday to finish seventh at the NCAA Men's Golf Central Regional, thereby qualifying for the NCAA Championship for the 52nd straight season.
Tied for 10th place after two rounds, the Cowboys were in danger of missing out on NCAA competition for the first time in the school's men's golf history. But Charles Howell carded a 68, the day's best round, and led the Cowboys to a two-over-par 286 on the day, 12-over 864 for the tournament. Houston won the regional at seven-under; Oklahoma was second at three-under.
Edward Loar was the highest Cowboy finisher at 19th place, carding a one-over-par score of 214 for the 54-hole tournament. Howell, bouncing back from an opening-round 79, finished 25th, two strokes behind Loar. Senior Bo Van Pelt finished 34th at five-over; freshman Boyd Summerhays (58th, eight-over) and Landry Mahan (66th, nine-over) rounded out the OSU lineup.
The NCAA Championship runs May 27-30 at the Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M.
