Men's Golf Earns Third Straight Maxwell Title
June 21, 1999 | Cowboy Golf
May 10, 1998
ARDMORE, Okla. - Oklahoma State appears to be getting hot at the right time.
The seventh-ranked Cowboy golf team earned its second consecutive tournament title Sunday when it held on for a one-stroke victory at the Maxwell by Pontiac, played here at Dornick Hills Country Club.
The Cowboys, who led by six strokes entering Sunday's final round, held off a late charge from Auburn, which fired a 4-under-par 276 to close to within one stroke of OSU, which was 4-over today to finish at 18-over 858.
Individually, OSU placed four golfers among the top 20. Freshman Charles Howell recorded his sixth top-10 finish in seven spring events, carding a final-round 69 to finish at 5-over, tied for seventh place. Howell, one of just two players to record two rounds in the 60s during the weekend, would have finished higher had it not been for a second-round 78.
Sophomores Edward Loar and Landry Mahan tied for ninth place, one stroke behind Howell, and senior Bo Van Pelt finished 17th at 7-over. Rounding out the OSU lineup was freshman Boyd Summerhays, who just missed the top 20 with a 23rd-place finish at 9-over.
Mahan made a drastic improvement over his Big 12 Championship performance - he finished 56th at the league tournament - despite competing in a tougher field. The Maxwell's 13 institutions included 12 ranked among the nation's top 50.
"It was a lot of fun today," said Mahan. "I forgot about the Big 12. I don't even remember that anymore. In golf, you are going to have bad rounds. I just happened to have three in a row. That's golf. Coach (Mike Holder) called me the most improved player in the Big 12 after my first round here."
The Cowboys headed into last month's Big 12 Championship on their longest winning drought in six seasons, but a conference title and the team's third straight Maxwell trophy have the team on a winning streak headed into NCAA play.
"We waited a long time to win a tournament, so winning two in a row was a little unexpected," said Holder. "It was a little bit closer than I thought it would be. But it was a good team effort, which is good for confidence going into the regional."
Three Cowboys competed as individuals. Senior Trent Brown joined Summerhays in 23rd place; freshman Peter Davidson tied for 53rd at plus-18; and junior T.J. Nance was 65th at 22-over.
OSU competes in the NCAA Central Regional May 14-16 in San Antonio. The top 10 teams from the regional will advance to the NCAA Championship in Albuquerque, N.M., on May 27-30.
