STILLWATER, Okla. - Freshman Charles Howell earned Newcomer-of-the-Year recognition and Mike Holder was named Coach of the Year in the Big 12 men's golf honors announced Monday.
Howell, who led the league in stroke average and finished third at last week's conference championship in Hutchinson, Kan., is trying to become the second true freshman in Oklahoma State history to lead the team in stroke average.
Joining Howell on the All-Big 12 first team are Edward Loar, who in 1996-97 became the first Cowboy true freshman to lead in stroke average, and senior Bo Van Pelt, a 1997 First-Team All-American who finished fourth at the league tournament. In addition, freshman Boyd Summerhays earned All-Big 12 honorable mention.
Holder earned conference coach-of-the-year honors after guiding the Cowboys, whose regular lineup includes two freshmen and two sophomores, to their 23rd conference championship in his 25 years as OSU's head coach.
The Cowboys compete in their final tuneup before NCAA action begins when OSU plays in The Maxwell on Saturday and Sunday. After that tournament, won by OSU in 1996 and '97, Oklahoma State competes in the NCAA Central Regional in San Antonio, Texas, on May 14-16; the NCAA Championship follows on May 27-30 in Albuquerque, N.M.
