Hennessy, Lane Qualify for Nationals

PHILADELPHIA - Andrew Hennessy and Nathaniel Lane reached the provisionally qualifying times for the NCAA Championships in their respective events at the Penn Relays here today.
Hennessy won the second section of the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 8;49.08, reaching the mark of 8:54.00 needed to provisionally qualify for nationals. He became the fourth Cowboy to qualify for nationals this season. Hennessy finished the race seventh overall.
Chuck Sloan was just three seconds away for getting an automatic qualifying bid into the NCAA Championships in the steeplechase. He finished the race in 8:46.19, good enough for fifth in the first section of the event.
Lane ran the 5,000m in 14:07.41, reaching the qualifying mark of 14:10.00. He finished eighth in the event. Lane received an automatic bid in the 10,000m at the Stanford Invitational last month. Ren Carlsen finished the 5,000m race in 14th with a time of 14:15.40.
Gitogo Churu ran in the 10,000m late Thursday night. Results were not in at press time.
The Cowboys will take the day off Friday and then two relay teams will compete again at the Penn Relays on Saturday. The 4xMile relay team of Staffan Stegmark, Chuck Sloan, Andrew Hennessy and Brian Young will run at 11:50 a.m. The 4x800m team of Jerry Rainey, David Greenshields, Cam Katchuck and Ben Phillips will compete at 3:15 p.m.
David Metzger will travel to Norman, Okla., to compete in the 1,500m at the Sooner Outdoor Invitational. His race is schedule to start at 1:10 p.m. Saturday.
