OKLAHOMA STATE OPENS 97th FOOTBALL SEASON -- Oklahoma State will open the 1998 football season Saturday afternoon when the Cowboys travel to Lawrence, Kan., to face Kansas' Jayhawks. It will mark the beginning of the 97th year of intercollegiate football at OSU, which fielded its first team in 1901. Oklahoma State's all-time intercollegiate football record stands at 431-451-18.
POKES-JAYHAWKS SET FOR ABC -- Oklahoma State's season opener at Kansas will be televised regionally by ABC. It will be the third straight Oklahoma State game to be televised by a major network. OSU's regular season finale at Baylor a year ago was an ABC regional game, and the Cowboys' Alamo Bowl appearance against Purdue was nationally televised by ESPN.
OSU ON THE ROAD -- Oklahoma State will depart for Kansas on Friday morning. The Cowboys will hold a light workout at Memorial Stadium and then depart for Overland Park, where they will headquarter at the Overland Park Marriott. OSU's Friday practice in Lawrence is closed. Head Coach Bob Simmons will be available just before practice. Please contact the Media Relations Office at OSU for details. OSU will depart for Stillwater, via bus charters, immediately following the game.
MORE AIR NOTES -- ABC's coverage of the OSU-Kansas game will be handled by Terry Gannon and Tim Brant. The game will be broadcast live on the Cowboy Radio Network with Bill Teegins and Tom Dirato calling the action. The network broadcast begins one hour before kickoff and concludes with a live call-in show featuring Head Coach Bob Simmons. The Cowboy Network is a division of Learfield Communications, Jefferson City, Mo.
THE SIMMONS ERA: YEAR NUMBER FOUR -- Saturday will also mark the beginning of Bob Simmons' fourth season as Oklahoma State's head football coach. Simmons was hired in December of 1994, and Saturday's game at Kansas will be the 36th game of his head coaching career.
RECORDS/RANKINGS -- Oklahoma State finished 8-4 in 1997 and was ranked 24th in the final AP and USA Today/ESPN Polls. Kansas finished the season with a record of 5-6. Neither team was ranked in the preseason top 25, although Oklahoma State received votes.
RIGHT INTO THE FIRE -- For the third time in the last four years, Oklahoma State will open its season against a conference opponent. In 1995 the Cowboys opened against Nebraska on Lewis Field, and last season (1997) OSU opened against Iowa State on the road. OSU has opened against a league opponent only three times since 1961, twice under Bob Simmons and in 1961 when Cliff Speegle's Cowboys opened at Iowa State.
COACH BOB SIMMONS -- Oklahoma State's head football coach is set to begin his fourth season and will take a career mark of 17-18 into Saturday's game at Kansas. Simmons has taken OSU from a 4-8 mark in his inaugural season (1995) to an 8-4 mark a year ago. He guided the Cowboys into the Top 25 and a Builders Square Alamo Bowl appearance against Purdue. His 1997 Cowboys opened with six straight wins, including triumphs over Texas and Colorado on back-to-back weekends on Lewis Field. A year ago, OSU climbed as high as number 12 in the national rankings and finished the season ranked 24th in both major polls.
HONORS AND MORE HONORS -- OSU's grid boss reaped numerous awards and honors after the 1997 season. He was the Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year as voted by league coaches. He was AFCA Regional Coach of the Year and a finalist for numerous national coach-of-the-year awards. The Black Coaches Association named Simmons its National Coach of the Year in March. His honors and awards transcended the football field. Early in the summer, the Will Rogers Council Boy Scouts of America named him their Man of the Year.
ON TOUR -- Coach Simmons has become one of the more popular speakers in this part of the country. His numerous speaking engagements over the off-season included the Governor's Conference on Safety, a national FCA camp in Arkansas and the Peter Lowe Success Seminar in Oklahoma City, where he was featured with Zig Ziglar, Colin Powell and Thomas Stafford, as well as others.

SIMMONS' THIRD-YEAR MARKS HIGH -- Oklahoma State's 8-4 record a year ago gave Bob Simmons the second-best third-year record of any OSU football coach. The best third-year mark ever by an OSU head coach was the 8-2-1 mark by Lynn Waldorf's third OSU squad in 1931. Jimmy Johnson (7-5) and Jim Stanley (7-4) each won seven in their third seasons, and Pat Jones had a 6-5 mark in his third season at OSU's grid boss. Floyd Gass was 4-6-1 in his third and final OSU season, while Phil Cutchin fashioned a 3-7 mark in his third year at the OSU helm.
WHAT ABOUT THE FOURTH -- Success has been fairly common for OSU coaches in their fourth seasons. In fact, every previous OSU coach enjoyed winning seasons in year number four, except for Cutchin and Johnson. In fact, three of the last four head coaches who had OSU tenures of four or more years went to bowl games in their fourth seasons. Cliff Speegle took the 1958 Cowboys to the Blue Grass Bowl. Jim Stanley guided OSU to the 1976 Tangerine Bowl, and Pat Jones guided his 1987 squad to a Sun Bowl win over West Virginia.
THE PUPIL VS. THE MENTOR -- Bob Simmons earned his coaching stripes under two of the finest, including Bill McCartney, who guided Colorado to phenomenal success. Both faced rugged rebuilding tasks in their first few seasons. Below is how each fared in their first few seasons, respectively.
McCartney at Colorado Simmons at Oklahoma State 1982 2-8-1 1995 4-8 1983 4-7 1996 5-6 1984 1-10 1997 8-4 (Alamo Bowl) 1985 7-5 (Freedom Bowl) 1998 0-0
OSU'S LAST TWO SEASONS AMONG LEAGUE'S BEST -- Over the past two seasons, Oklahoma State has logged a 13-10 mark, tying for the fifth-best record in the Big 12 Conference. OSU and Texas Tech have identical 13-10 records over the past two seasons, and trail only Nebraska, Kansas State, Colorado and Texas A&M, if you combine the two-year records.

Opening-Day Notes
O-STATE IN OPENERS -- Oklahoma State has an overall record of 54-36-5 on opening day, and that equals a winning percentage of .595. The Cowboys' longest streak of consecutive opening-day wins is eight, and that has happened twice (1928-35 and 1981-88). OSU lost eight straight openers from 1959 through 1966 and, considering a 1967 tie with Air Force, went 12 straight winless years on opening day.
ON THE ROAD -- For the second straight season, Oklahoma State will be opening its season away from home, although the Pokes will be looking for the same result. Last year, OSU opened at Iowa State with a 21-14 win. Overall, Oklahoma State is 15-29-1 in season openers on the road but have won the last two, including last year's win at Iowa State and a 1994 win at Northern Illinois.
A DAYLIGHT OPENER, FOR A CHANGE -- Saturday's 2:30 p.m. (CDT) kickoff at Kansas represents the earliest kickoff in a season opener for Oklahoma State since 1983. The last 14 season openers have had early evening or night kickoff times. You have to go back to 1983, when the Cowboys opened on Lewis Field against North Texas at 1:30 p.m., to find an earlier kickoff time.
TELEVISED OPENERS -- Saturday's regionally televised (ABC) opener at Kansas will mark the third time since 1958 that an OSU opener has been televised by a major network and the sixth time that an opener has been either on a major network or cable network. OSU is 4-1 in televised openers.

OPENING DAY HIGHS AND LOWS -- Oklahoma State's largest margin of victory on opening day came in 1914 when a school-record 134 points were scored in a shutout win over Phillips. The largest margin in an opening-day loss was the 43-point spread in 1995, when Nebraska outscored the Cowboys 61-24 on Lewis Field...Oklahoma State's two most popular opening-day opponents over the years have been Arkansas and Tulsa. OSU and Arkansas have met 14 times on opening day, while the Cowboys and Golden Hurricane have played seven times in season openers...Saturday will mark the eighth time in OSU football history the Cowboys have played a season opener within the borders of the state of Kansas. OSU opened at Lawrence in 1925, at Kansas State in 1917, 1947 and 1956 and at Wichita State in 1937, 1948 and 1978. OSU's record in season openers in the Sunflower State is 4-3...Oklahoma State has posted 17 shutout wins on opening day, the last being a 34-0 win over Wichita State in 1975. Conversely, the Cowboys have been shut out 17 times on opening day, the last being a 39-0 loss to Arkansas in 1969.
SIGNIFICANT OPENERS -- Obviously, every season opener has been important, but several, including this year's at Kansas, have taken an added air of significance because of increased expectations. Following are capsule looks at several previous OSU openers and the circumstances that surrounded each.
- 1997 at Iowa State -- After going 4-8 and 5-6 in his first two seasons, Head Coach Bob Simmons said the goal for 1997 was to win one more game. That would give OSU a winning season and put them in position for a bowl berth. To an outside world, the task became more difficult, maybe even impossible, one week prior to the season opener at Iowa State when 11 players (including six starters) were ruled academically ineligible. OSU's opener, on the road and against a conference opponent, would go a long way toward providing the yardstick by which the '97 Cowboys would be judged. The Cowboys won at Ames, 21-14, and used that success to help fashion a 6-0 mark and number-12 national ranking in mid-October.
- 1985 at Washington -- The Cowboys finished 10-2 in 1984 and had a majority on both sides of the ball returning, including All-Americans Thurman Thomas, Leslie O'Neal and Mark Moore. As OSU prepared for the '85 season, its season opener at Washington took on monumental significance. Don James' Huskies were picked by some the preseason favorite to win the national championship and losing, especially at home, was not common. OSU's task got even bigger when quarterback Ronnie Williams went out of the game in the first half with a fractured jaw. Backup quarterback Rusty Rankin, with Thomas and others, led the Cowboys to a convincing 31-17 win. OSU would go on to win eight of its first nine and make a return trip to the Gator Bowl in December.
- 1981 vs. Tulsa -- Coming off a 4-7 finish in 1980, Jimmy Johnson's Cowboys were looking for better things when they opened the season against Tulsa in Stillwater. The Golden Hurricane were the defending Missouri Valley Conference Champions and appeared to have a victory in the bag over OSU on Lewis Field. OSU trailed by two with 47 seconds to play. Quarterback John Doerner directed the final OSU drive, successfully completing three straight passes to put the Cowboys in range for a Larry Roach field-goal try. Roach's 24-yard attempt split the uprights as time ran out and the Cowboys had a 23-21 victory. OSU went on to a 7-5 record and an Independence Bowl berth against Texas A&M.
- 1945 at Arkansas -- Coach Jim Lookabaugh's Aggies were coming off an 8-1, Cotton Bowl season in 1944 and were looking for even better things. A season opener against Arkansas in Fayetteville would provide a definite barometer for possible success. The Aggies passed their initial test with a 19-14 win over the Hogs and used that game to propel them to OSU's only unbeaten, untied season of intercollegiate football in history. OSU won eight in a row during the regular-season campaign and capped the year with a 33-13 win over St. Mary's of California in the Sugar Bowl. It was a grand finale for former OSU greats like Bob Fenimore and Neill Armstrong; OSU would suffer back-to-back losing seasons in 1946 and 1947.
Game One Opponent...Kansas
RECOGNIZE THESE GUYS? -- Oklahoma State will be facing the University of Kansas on the football field for the first time since Nov. 18, 1995. OSU and KU had met 50 consecutive seasons until the Big 12's north-south alignment put the teams in a two-year scheduling hiatus. The Cowboys play at Kansas this season and will host the Jayhawks in 1999.
THE SERIES -- Kansas leads the overall series by a 28-23-3 margin and will bring a six-game winning streak over OSU into Saturday's season opener. Oklahoma State has not defeated the Jayhawks since a 37-34 decision at Lawrence in 1989. At Lawrence, Kansas leads the series 15-13-1, and the Jayhawks have won two straight, including 24-14 in 1994 and 26-18 in 1992.
KANSAS, LAST YEAR -- Under first-year coach Terry Allen, Kansas won four of its first five, including a 15-7 win over Missouri and a 20-17 win over Oklahoma. The Jayhawks appeared to be headed for a possible bowl game before a demanding season-ending schedule resulted in five losses in six games and KU finished with a 5-6 overall record, 3-5 in the Big 12's North Division.
'98 JAYHAWKS, AT A GLANCE -- Kansas returns 44 lettermen and 14 starters from last year's team. The bulk of Kansas' returning starters are on offense, where 11 starters return, including quarterback Zac Wegner, who started the final six games of the '97 season. KU's quarterback passed for 970 yards and four touchdowns a year ago and had an efficiency rating of 104.64. On the defensive side, Kansas returns four starters, including outside linebacker Patrick Brown, who was an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection last season.
SERIES NOTES -- The OSU-Kansas series has been one of dominating streaks, by both schools. Between 1923 and 1968, Oklahoma State managed only six wins in 27 tries. KU won seven straight between 1946 and 1952 and seven more between 1959 and 1965. An Oklahoma State win in 1969 at Lawrence signaled the start of a 21-year domination by the Cowboys. Between 1969 and 1989, Oklahoma State had a 17-1-3 mark vs. Kansas. The lone Jayhawk victory in that span came in 1972 on Lewis Field. Kansas will enter this year's game with a current six-game win streak vs. Oklahoma State...Coach Bob Simmons is 0-1 vs. Kansas as a head coach, losing to Kansas in Stillwater in his first OSU season. While Simmons was an assistant at Colorado, the Buffs were 7-0 vs. Kansas...KU's Terry Allen is 0-1 vs. OSU as a head coach. His 1990 Northern Iowa team suffered a 33-23 loss to the Cowboys on Sept. 15 on Lewis Field...There aren't many current OSU-KU connections but, one of note is OSU Coordinator of Media Relations Will Hancock who is a 1991 KU graduate and still rumored to wear his "Beak 'em Hawks" t-shirt from time to time...The last time these two teams met, Kansas was wrapping up a fantastic regular season. On Nov. 18, 1995, KU came to Stillwater with an 8-2 record and ranked 15th in the country. KU left town with a hard-fought 22-17 win...OSU-Kansas games of the past have been a showcase for great individual performances. Eventual Heisman Trophy winner Barry Sanders had his third-best rushing day ever in 1988 with 312 yards against the Jayhawks. Quarterback Mike Gundy's 429-yard effort against Kansas in 1989 is still an OSU single-game best. Alex Loyd's 16 pass receptions against Kansas in 1949 is still tops on the OSU single-game list. On the other side, Gayle Sayers had the third-best single-game rushing day in KU history in 1962, when he romped for 283 yards against Oklahoma State.
COACH TERRY ALLEN -- Kansas' second-year head coach assumed his present position on Dec. 28, 1996. He came to Kansas after eight seasons as head coach at Northern Iowa, where he won 75 while losing just 26. He was the winningest active coach in Division I-AA when he left Northern Iowa for Kansas. Allen is a 1979 graduate of Northern Iowa.

OSU Player Notes
COWBOY QBs...BACK FOR AN ENCORE -- Oklahoma State returns talent and depth at a number of positions, including the all-important quarterback spot. Returning are sophomore starter Tony Lindsay and junior backup Chris Chaloupka. Lindsay, the reigning Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year, will get the starting nod Saturday at Kansas. Last year, Lindsay turned heads across the country with amazing performances all season. He was first in the Big 12 in passing efficiency by more than 17 points over the second-rated passer. He recorded the second-best single-season passing numbers by an OSU freshman with 1,172 yards, and he notched the fourth-best single-season rushing number by a freshman with 733 yards. His 1,736 yards of total offense was the best mark ever by an OSU rookie. and his 56 points represented the third-best single-season scoring mark by a Cowboy freshman. He was the Big 12 Conference's most effective quarterback and should put himself in position for postseason recognition in 1998. Chaloupka started the first two games and played extensively all season. His best effort of the season came on Lewis Field against Fresno State when he completed 11 of 12 for 134 yards and three touchdowns. He threw for five touchdowns on the season.

KENYATTA ON BUTKUS LIST -- Linebacker Kenyatta Wright has been included on the initial "watch list" for the 1998 Butkus Award, honoring the nation's outstanding linebacker. Wright is an All-Big 12 and All-America candidate and coming off a 1997 season in which he registered 72 total tackles, four tackles for loss and three passes broken up. For his two-year OSU career, Kenyatta has 144 total tackles, 14 for losses, four sacks, eight passes broken up and two fumble recoveries. The initial list of Butkus Award candidates features 68 players, including eight from the Big 12 Conference.
OSU 'BACKERS MAY BE THE BEST -- One of the strongest parts of Oklahoma State's 1998 unit is the linebacker corps. Talented and deep is the best way to describe this unit as they get ready for Saturday's opener at Kansas. Eight players occupy three positions on the depth chart and Cowboy opponents are likely to see all eight get a lot of playing time. Tarrell Knauls and Kenyatta Wright both started all season a year ago and are back for 1998. Add Raymond Cato, who started 11 times two years ago and Clint Metcalf, who earned one start in 1997 and these four players have 40 career starts between them. Justin Thomas, Dwayne Levels and Billy Stone are also in the mix, as is junior college transfer Troy West, who was the top-rated junior-college linebacker in the country a year ago at Hutchinson Community College.
SPEAKING OF STARTERS -- At least nine Oklahoma State players are expected to extend double-digit consecutive start streaks in the season opener. Center Jeremy Offutt will make his 20th straight start and tops the list. Linebacker Kenyatta Wright has 17 straight starts and could extend that if he is in the lineup against the Jayhawks. The list of OSU's players who have consecutive starts in double figures is below:
Player CS TS Jeremy Offutt 19 21 Kenyatta Wright 17 17 Andrel Waddle 11 19 Adam Davis 11 17 Cortney Mallory 11 13 Trent Alexander 11 12 Tarrell Knauls 11 11 Tony Lindsay 9 9 David Camacho 8 10 Willie Grissom 0 18
FOBBS + SIMMONS = PRODUCTION -- Oklahoma State heads into the new season with one of the most talented tailback tandems in the country. Nathan Simmons and Jamaal Fobbs combined for 1,557 yards and eight touchdowns last year. Fobbs, son of Baylor assistant coach Lee Fobbs, led OSU and was ninth in the Big 12 last season in rushing with 846 yards. He averaged 5.3 yards per carry. Simmons, son of OSU Head Coach Bob Simmons, was 11th in the league in rushing with 711 yards and five touchdowns. he averaged 4.3 yards per carry. Oklahoma State, Nebraska and Texas A&M were the only schools with two rushers among the league's top 12 in 1997. OSU's and Texas A&M's tailback tandems return for 1998.

RECORD BOOK WATCH -- Current OSU players who will be making their way up career charts this season include kicker Tim Sydnes who enters the season with 131 career points and number 12 on the all-time scoring chart. Sydnes needs 25 points to move past Colin Ankerson into 11th place and 32 points to pass David Thompson and move into the career top ten. Quarterback Tony Lindsay is on the verge of appearing on a couple of charts. He needs 284 yards to move past Mike Miller into 23rd on the career total offense list. The Denver sophomore is also just 385 yards from passing Glenn Baxter and moving into 19th place on the career passing list. Wide receiver Willie Grissom heads into the 1998 season with 50 career pass receptions at OSU. He needs eight to pass Bert Milliner and move into 22nd place on the all-time receptions list and 10 to move past Ron Ingram and into the top 20.
