Cowgirls Fight Heat to Finish Eighth at Big 12 Championships

WACO, Texas - Oklahoma State's women's track and field team had to overcome the heat and humidity to place eighth in the third annual Big 12 Championships here today.
With temperatures in the 90s, the Cowgirls showed fatigue early on in the day.
"It sucked them dry," OSU coach Catrina Acosta said. "You could tell it was wearing on them by the way they were finishing. The hard part of the race is over, and they have no gas."
Sherita Jackson was able to persevere as she finished fourth in the 200 meters and seventh in the 100m dash.
She completed the 200m race in 23.57 seconds. Texas took the first three finishes with LaKeisha Backus winning the event in 22.86 seconds.
Jackson crossed the line in the 100m in 11.83 seconds. Backus also won this event in 11.16 seconds. Jackson was unable to reach the NCAA qualifying mark in either of the events today.
"I was pleased with Sherita's performance as far as placing and points," Acosta said. "It's hard to beat (Big 12 Champion)Texas, but we were really looking for her to hit the qualifying mark. She's always been the cardiac kid, so that's a little disappointing."
Alexandra Lindquist also helped the Cowgirls in their point total as she finished third in the 1,500m run with a time of 4:26.84. Andrene Thompson finished fifth in the 800m dash in 2:12.53.
The Cowgirls improved on their 12th-place finish last year with a eighth-place finish this year. OSU had 44 team points, well surpassing last year's mark of 15 points.
"It was a great meet," Acosta said. "We did a lot better that last year. We actually beat some people and looked competitive the whole way."
OSU will now get ready for the NCAA Championships on June 2-5 in Boise, Idaho.
