BOISE, Idaho - Chuck Sloan finished fifth as Andrew Hennessy crossed the line in ninth in their semifinal heat of the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Championships here today.
The second heat was a close one, with the difference between No. 1 and No. 5 being less than a second. Sloan crossed the line in fifth with a time of 8:56.42, on the heels of Northern Arizona's Billy Herman's 8:56.37. Colorado's Adam Batliner won the heat with a time of 8:55.73, with Portland's Todd Davis finishing second in 8:56.22. Indiana's Tom Chorny placed third with a time of 8:56.29.
Sloan's time was the 11th-best in the event. Hennessy's 9:19.83 earned his a ninth-place spot in the heat.
Texas-El Paso's Cesar Perez-Segovia, who had the best time in the nation entering the race, finished seventh in the heat with a time of 9:05.14.
Finals for the steeplechase are at 8:25 p.m. Saturday, the last day of the meet.
