AUSTIN, Texas - Charles Howell's impressive sophomore season continued Monday as he found himself in a tie for third place after two rounds of the Cleveland Golf/Morris Williams Intercollegiate.
However, the fourth-ranked OSU men's golf team is sixth after the first two rounds. The Cowboys' opening-round score of 307 is their highest one-round total of the season; a second-round 297 did move the team to within four strokes of third place, but OSU is 16 shots back of Georgia, which leads the tourney heading into the final round.
Third-ranked Howell, who has finished in the top five in four of this year's six tournaments, rebounded from an opening-round 75 to card a 2-under-par score of 70 in the afternoon session. He is tied with three other golfers for third place at 1-over; Georgia's Ryuji Imada is the leader at 2-under, and Texas' freshman phenom, David Gossett, is second at even par.
Freshman Anders Hultman is Howell's nearest teammate with a score of 151; juniors Landry Mahan (26th, 153) and Edward Loar (33rd, 154) and freshman Nick Seymour (63rd, 161) rounded out the OSU five. Freshman Bret Guetz, competing as an individual, is 59th at 160.
The tournament, contested at the Hills of Lakeway Golf Course in Austin, Texas, concludes with a single round Tuesday.
