The Cowboys - Oklahoma State is the winningest program in the nation, in any sport. No other team compares as far as winning percentage and national team titles. The Cowboys are in their 80th season as a collegiate program and have amassed a 809-81-19 record. The Cowboys have also had 78 wrestlers win 119 individual titles, including two Cowboys that are on the current team. Despite what you may have read in these notes earlier the Cowboys do not have a losing record to Illinois they are actually 10-1 against the Fightin' Illini. The Cowboys actually do not have a losing record against anyone. They are tied with Iowa at 15-15-1 and Clarion 1-1.
In The Polls - The Cowboys started the season ranked No. 1 and have remained there throughout the season. The Sooners are currently ranked fifth in the latest poll.
The Series - The Cowboys come nto the OU dual with a 104-24-8 advantage in the bedlam series. The Pokes have won the previous six meetings, including a 24-16 win earlier this season in Norman.
Oklahoma - Oklahoma comes into the dual ranked fifth. They are led by sixth year head coach Jack Spates. They have several talented wrestlers and are a very balanced team. Shane and Dane Valdez, Rod Jones and John Henry Ward are three seniors on the Sooners squad who are ranked nationally. They also have talented sophomore Michael Lightner and highly-touted David Kjeldgaard. Freshmen Jared Frayer and Michael Barger have made immediate impacts for the Sooners this season.
Looking Back - Oklahoma State won a pair of duals over the weekend. The Pokes defeated Oregon (36-6) and Oregon State (32-6) and extended their dual winning streak to 64 straight, just 12 dual wins off the school record. Three Cowboys also won their matches in the NWCA All-Star dual on Monday. Brian Burrows won a 3-1 decision over Jody Marple of Central Oklahoma. Eric Guerrero and Mark Smith each won their matches 15-6. Teague Moore suffered his first loss of the season when he lost 5-4 to Stephan Abas of Fresno State.
Up Next - The Cowboys will host Michigan State on Monday. That dual was originally scheduled for Jan.7 but was postponed due to bad weather in the north. Tickets remain for the dual and can be purchased at the OSU ticket office (405) 744-5745 or (800) 522-6858.
Start Spreading the News - Oklahoma State's wrestling program is starting to garner national attention. The Cowboys were mentioned in the streak section of the most recent edition of Sports Illustrated. Teague Moore will also be featured in SI in the faces in the crowd segment. The Cowboys have been on television four times this season (Minnesota and Iowa State at the national duals, Iowa State in Ames and Arizona State) and are slated for TV time in the Oklahoma dual as well as the NWCA All-Star dual.
And then there was two - With Teague Moore's loss to Stephan Abas, two Cowboys remain undefeated on the season. Mark Smith and Eric Guerrero both have unblemished records. Guerrero is 20-0 and Smith is 25-0. Both have won 25 straight matches.
Chasing 100 - Eric Guerrero won the 100th match of his career with his win over McNamara in the All-Star dual. Guerrero currently ranks 13th on the OSU all-time winning percentage charts with an .882 percentage. He became the 18th wrestler in school history with 100 wins. Teague Moore needs just three wins to reach the 100-win plateau.
The Streak - A little bit about the Cowboys current 64-dual winning streak. The streak is the third longest streak in school history behind 76 and 70 match skeins. The Cowboys have the longest current streak in any sport in the country. The Pokes have won 51 straight duals on the road. In the current streak 46 of the 64 teams were ranked at the time of the dual.
Pin 'em - Dave Anderton is back on a familiar roll. He has pinned five straight opponents. For the season he has 12 falls.
The Schedule - A casual observer might think that the Cowboys winning streak is weighted down by easy competition. The following is a list of the teams the Cowboys have wrestled or will wrestle this season.
