Lincoln, Neb. - Sophomore pitcher Matt Smith threw eight innings of three-hit ball to lead Oklahoma State to a 10-2 win over Nebraska in Big 12 action Friday night at Buck Beltzer Stadium.
Smith moved to 7-1 on the season as the Cowboys won for the eighth straight game and 13th time in the last 14 contests.
Oklahoma State took a 3-0 lead in the third inning, two of the runs coming off of RBI singles by Kevin Lucas and Josh Holliday. Lamont Matthews hit his 16th homer of the season, a solo shot, and Lucas hit his second RBI single of the night in the fourth as the Pokes took a 5-0 lead.
Billy Gasparino wrapped a two-out single to left field which plated two runs in the sixth to give OSU a 7-0 advantage and knocked out Nebraska starter Scott Frees who fell to 5-3 on the year.
Smith pitched six innings of one-hit shutout ball before Nebraska scored two runs in the seventh off of a homer by left fielder John Cole, his fifth of the season. The runs snapped Smith's 13 inning scoreless streak against the Huskers dating back to last season when he shutout Nebraska for seven innings on April 25, 1998. Smith gave up three hits in eight innings of work and struck out seven in winning for the fourth straight game.
Ryan Budde added a three-run homer, his first of the season, in the ninth to close out the scoring for the Cowboys.
