STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State opened spring football drills Saturday afternoon with a padless practice on Lewis Field under clear skies and ideal spring weather conditions.
Fourth-year coach Bob Simmons, on the field after undergoing kindey transplant surgery 11 days ago, put his team through a two-and-a-half-hour padless practice that featured a lot of fundamentals and plenty of repititions for players on both sides of the ball.
A pair of starters were missing from Saturday's opening session. Quarterback Tony Lindsay missed Saturday's practice after undergoing a procedure last week in Denver to remove excess tissue from a valve in his heart. The laser surgery was successful, and he will be back at practice next week.
Defensive back Trent Alexander also missed the initial session after the death of his grandmother.
"This was the first day, and it was a good day," Simmons said after the practice. "I told the team they looked like a veteran squad. We have a wealth of speed on defense, and the offense could be prolific."
The Cowboys will take the field again on Monday for another non-pad session. OSU's first full-pad practice of the spring is scheduled for Wednesday. The Cowboys will hold their first major scrimmage of the spring Saturday, March 28.
