STILLWATER, Okla. - The Oklahoma State men's golf team begins the season ranked fifth in the nation according to the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings released last week.
Sophomore Charles Howell (seventh) and junior Edward Loar (ninth) are both ranked in the top 10 individually. A panel of collegiate golf coaches voted on the rankings for this preseason edition; the first computerized ranking will be administered by the College Golf Foundation on Wednesday, Oct. 7.
Howell and teammate Landry Mahan had impressive beginnings to the academic year in a non-collegiate event, the U.S. Amateur Championship. Howell recorded the second-best stroke-average score among the 300-plus entrants in the event and eventually advanced to the round of 16 in match play. Mahan went Howell one better, turning in a quarterfinal appearance.
The Cowboys' 1998-99 season begins Sept. 19-20, when the team travels to Minneapolis for the annual NCAA Preview tournament.
