Cowboys Lead at NCAA Golf Championship

ALBUQUERQUE - Oklahoma State used a balanced team effort and a tremendous back nine to take a one-shot lead after today's first round of the NCAA Division I Mens Golf Championship.
Sophomore Edward Loar fired an opening-round 68 to lead the team individually as OSU shot 10-under for the day and 11-under on the back nine. Loar is in fourth place, one shot behind a trio of first-round individual leaders, Ryan Armour of Ohio State, J.J. Henry of TCU and Kyle Voska of Miami (Ohio).
The Cowboys' score of 278 is the team's best one-round total this spring and has OSU one shot ahead of Georgia and three strokes ahead of third-place Georgia Tech. In all, 13 teams including Big 12 member Nebraska, which is 10th at two-under are under par after the first round of the tournament, played at the par-72 UNM Championship Course.
Freshmen Charles Howell and Boyd Summerhays and senior Bo Van Pelt are two strokes behind Loar in 21st place after opening-round 70s. Sophomore Landry Mahan opened with a round of 77 and is in 140th place among 156 competitors.
The Cowboys, competing in their 52nd consecutive NCAA Championship, are looking for their ninth national title and their third in the 1990s. Ranked sixth nationally entering the championship, the Cowboys have finished fifth or higher at the NCAA Championship 42 times in their previous 51 national tournaments.
OSU's five competitors tee off Thursday between 7:12 and 7:48 a.m. MDT. The 30-team field will be cut to 15 squads after Thursday's second round; the final two rounds will be played Friday and Saturday.
