Cowboys Give Strong Performance at Kansas State

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Oklahoma State's men's track team walked away with four first-place finishes, but it wasn't enough in the team totals as the Cowboys placed third at the Wildcat Invitational here Saturday.
The Cowboys finished with 64 points for the first meet of the 1999 season. Fellow Big 12 member Nebraska led the way with 156 total points, and host Kansas State placed second with 112 points.
Cam Katchuck, Chuck Sloan, Andrew Hennessy and Brian Young all crossed the line first in their respective events to help the Cowboys' effort.
True freshman Katchuck ran the 600y in 1:13.70, bettering the second-place finisher, Kansas State's Matt Davis, by .66 seconds. It was the second time Katchuck has won the event, beating his mark of 1:14.40 set at the OU All-Comers meet, where he competed unattached.
Returning All-American Sloan won the 1,000m in 2:30.00, with seniors Gitogo Churu coming in sixth and Ren Carlsen finishing seventh. Sloan also placed third in the mile run, finishing in 4:13.05.
As a newcomer to the team, Hennessy paced OSU in a couple of events. The senior won the mile run in 4:11.44, almost a full second ahead of Kansas State's Zach Davies' 4:12.35. Hennessy also led the Cowboys in the 800m, finishing third in 1:57.32.
Young, a Big 12 Indoor Champion in the 1,000m, led the pack in the 3,000m. His 8:38.10 finish was far ahead his closest opponent, Kansas State's Brian Ismert, who finished the race in 8:50.51. Cowboy freshman Bruce Wright finished the event in fifth place, with a mark of 9:03.05.
The Cowboys next head to the Bank of Fayetteville on Saturday, Jan. 23, in Fayetteville, Ark.
