Cowboys Finish Ninth at ASU Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. - Fifth-ranked Oklahoma State recovered from a poor start to finish ninth after Sunday's final round of the ASU Thunderbird/Savane Invitational men's golf tournament.
After a first-round score of 301, which tied for the worst round by any of the 17 teams in the tournament, OSU returned to its usual ways, carding under-par team scores in the second and third rounds. The Cowboys' Sunday 286 moved them up two spots to a ninth-place finish.
Freshman Anders Hultman, who continues to play solid golf, was a bright spot for the Cowboys this weekend, finishing 13th individually to lead the team with a 2-under-par score of 214. Hultman has finished in the top 20 in three of the past four tournaments. The Cowboys' other four scoring players in the tournament -- Edward Loar (22nd place with a score of 217), Charles Howell (29th, 218), Landry Mahan (56th, 224) and Peter Davidson (tied with Mahan) -- all finished out of the top 20. Nick Seymour, competing individually, finished 66th at 226.
Excellent playing conditions produced some tournament and course records Sunday. Arizona State's Jeff Quinney, who won medalist honors by five strokes, shot a 62, breaking the tournament record (65) and the Karsten Course record as well; the latter record had been 63, held by Phil Mickelson.
OSU's next competition is the Big 12 Championship on April 26-27 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. The Cowboys are the only team to have won the league tournament in its two years of existence.
