STILLWATER, Okla. -- Women's basketball player Kourtney Bower and baseball player Josh Holliday were named the OSU Student-Athletes of the Year at the school's annual Student-Athlete Academic Awards Banquet held April 22.
Bower, a health major, finished her OSU career this past March after spending her senior season as the team's starting point guard. Like Holliday, she was also named the outstanding graduating senior in her sport. Holliday, currently finishing his senior season with the Baseball Cowboys, will earn his degree in health as well.
The banquet also honored a total of 201 OSU student-athletes and managers and trainers with academic awards. To qualify for the honor, student-athletes must earn on OSU cumulative grade point average equal to or greater than 3.0; earn on OSU GPA equal to or greater than 3.0 for the spring and fall 1998 semesters combined; or earn an OSU GPA equal to or greater than 3.0 for the fall 1998 semester if they are first-year freshman or transfer students.
In addition, the OSU Academic Services for Student-Athletes department recognized the achievements of OSU student-athletes in the Stillwater and general Oklahoma community, where they amassed over 1,300 hours of service, topped by football player Robbie Gillem's 96 hours of service. Women's soccer earned the Team Service Award.
The 60 student-athletes who will graduate during calendar 1999 were also recognized, and each sport's outstanding student-athlete received a special award. Men's basketball player Adrian Peterson, soccer player Melissa Wykes and wrestler Justin Turner were honored with special Hustle Awards for special effort in the classroom.
