Baseball Wins Slugfest Over Kansas, 16-10

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Oklahoma State once again rode the pitching of Matt Smith and exploded for 18 hits in a 16-10 win over Kansas Saturday afternoon at Hoglund Park.
Smith scattered six hits over seven innings and allowed just one run while striking out 11 to move to 8-1 on the season. He has now won five straight decisions including four in Big 12 action.
Oklahoma State moved to 27-10 overall and 9-7 in the Big 12 while Kansas fell to 10-28 and 4-18 in conference play.
The Cowboys opened the scoring in the first when Billy Gasparino knocked a RBI single to left field that plated Carl-s Gautreaux to make the score 1-0.
Josh Holliday added a two-run homer in the third which gave the Pokes a 3-0 advantage. The Jayhawks scored a run in the bottom of the inning when John Nelson hit a ground rule RBI double to right field which cut the OSU lead to 3-1.
OSU and KU were locked in a pitcher's dual for the next four innings before the Cowboys exploded for seven runs in the eighth to put the game away. Holliday led off the inning with his second dinger of the day as the Cowboys batted around with six hits in the stanza.
Cowboy relievers Ryan Herrmann and Grant Bergman struggled in the eighth allowing five Jayhawk runs on four consecutive walks by Herrmann and two base hits off of Bergman to cut the lead to 10-6.
Catcher Chris Haggard belted a two-run homer in the ninth and Gasparino added a RBI triple, his third extra base hit of the game, to spark a six-run inning as the Pokes took a 16-6 lead.
Gasparino went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a triple and three RBIs to lead the Cowboy hitting attack.
Kansas rallied for four runs in the ninth before Rusty Rushing came in and closed out the game for the Pokes.
The teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader today but it was postponed until tommorrow because of cold and windy weather conditions. The double-dip is scheduled to begin tomorrow at noon.
