HOMESTEAD, Fla. - Oklahoma State exploded for six runs in the first inning and never looked back as the Cowboys defeated Dartmouth 17-7 Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Homestead Challenge.
Head coach Tom Holliday was pleased with the win despite the Cowboys season- high six errors in the contest. "After last night, this was a difficult game to come back and play this morning. We obviously didn't have a good day defensively but Thom (Dreier) pitched around that pretty well and were able to get the win," Holliday said.
Toby Rhodes opened the game with a solo homer to right field which was followed later in the inning by Lance Smith's grand slam homer as the Cowboys led 6-0 after the first.
"Rhodes and Smith gave us a lift today, they got us going and set the tempo for the ball game," said Holliday.
Dartmouth scored two runs in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 6-2. OSU would come back to score five runs in the third, four coming via a Lamont Matthews grand-slam homer which gave the Cowboys an 11-2 lead.
OSU added six more runs in the next three innings to seal the win and moved to 2-0 all-time against the Big Green.
Thom Dreier pitched a season-high seven innings and gave up three earned runs off of ten hits with ten strikeouts and moved to 3-1 on the season.
Oklahoma State moved to 18-8 on the season with the win while Dartmouth dropped to 1-10 on the year. The Cowboys close out the three-game Florida trip against Harvard tomorrow at 5 p.m. CT.
