Baseball Rallies to Defeat Iowa State, 5-4

STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State scored three runs in the top of the ninth and overcame a 4-2 deficit to defeat Iowa State 5-4 in baseball action Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Stadium.
Chris Becerra hit a two-run triple to left field with no outs in the ninth to tie the game and Billy Gasparino followed with a sacrifice fly to right to give OSU the 5-4 advantage. Reliever Denny New shut the door on the Cyclones in the ninth to get his first win as a Cowboy.
Oklahoma State scored a run in the second and and another off a solo homer by Becerra in the third to lead 2-0 after three innings.
Iowa State came back to tie the score with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, the first off a solo homer by rightfielder Ben Van Iderstine. The Cyclones took the lead in the fifth when second baseman Spencer Allen hit an RBI single to right field scoring Aaron Runk, who had hit a double down the right field line, to give the team a 3-2 lead. Iowa State designated hitter Jade O'Brien lead off the sixth with a homer to right field to give the Cyclones a 4-2 advantage which held until the top of the ninth.
Cowboy starter Thom Dreier pitched five innings and gave up four runs on eight hits while striking out two. New threw four innings of shutout relief and gave up two hits while striking out five to move to 1-1 on the year.
Cyclone starter Brian Curtin pitched eight innings and gave up four runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and seven walks before being relieved in the ninth. Josh Twedt threw in the ninth and was tagged with the loss to drop to 1-1 on the season.
With the win, the Pokes move to 14-7 overall and 3-5 in Big 12 action while Iowa State dropped its tenth straight game and fell to 5-15 on the season and 0-8 in conference play.
The win was also the 100th victory for head coach Tom Holliday. who is in his third season as the pilot of the OSU program.
Both teams will be back in action tommorrow in the series finale at 2 p.m. at Reynolds Stadium.
