STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State will face Georgia Tech Thursday afternoon in the first round of the Midwest Regional at Wichita State's Eck Stadium.
The Cowboys, 38-19 on the season, were named to the six-team field of the 1998 Midwest Regional on Monday afternoon. OSU and Georgia Tech will play at 3 p.m. The host Shockers are the number one seed and will face Southeast Missouri at 7 p.m. Thursday night.
Arizona State and Arkansas round out the Midwest Regional field and will square off at 11 a.m. Thursday morning.
The Oklahoma State-Georgia Tech winner will play the Arkansas-Arizona State winner at 7 p.m. Friday. The OSU-Tech loser will face the Wichita State-Southeast Missouri State loser at 11 a.m. on Friday.
Oklahoma State will be making its 17th straight and 31st overall appearance in NCAA regional competition. The Cowboys have advanced to the College World Series 18 times, including seven straight CWS appearances between 1981-87.
"Going to a regional is what you work for all season," said second-year OSU Head Coach Tom Holliday. "We deserve it. We played a tough schedule all season long to set the table for post-season play. All we wanted to do was be in a regional and get the chance to go the College World Series and we think, with the ball club we have, we'll pitch and play defense and if somebody beats us they'll have to beat us because we won't beat ourselves. I think playing in the Big 12 Conference Tournament prepares us for any regional in the country."
OSU hosted the Midwest Regional last year, losing to UCLA in the championship game. 1998 will mark the second time OSU has been in a regional at Wichita. The Cowboys lost to Wichita State by a 5-2 margin in the title game of the 1992 Midwest Regional.
