1999 OSU Baseball Postgame Notes
June 21, 1999 | Cowboy Baseball
June 14, 1999
· Carlos Gautreaux led off tonight's game with a single up the middle. In Friday's 11-3 loss to Alabama, OSU's first hit came in the fourth inning.
· Like Friday's game, tonight's contest started with OSU loading the bases in the top of the first. In both cases, though, the Cowboys failed to score.
· Lamont Matthews' fifth-inning hit by pitch marked the 97th time an OSU player had been plunked this season, a school record and the fifth-highest single-season total in NCAA Division I history. Nevada holds the all-time record with 125 in 1997.
· Matt Smith lasted six innings, his longest outing since a May 14 start at Texas Tech. He recorded his sixth double-digit-strikeout game of the season.
· Freshman Toby Rhodes hit his seventh home run in the eighth inning. Rhodes recorded his second career three-hit game in tonight's contest.
· Gautreaux recorded his third three-hit game of the season.
· The Cowboys are now 37-36 in their College World Series history and have suffered their second straight two-and-out CWS. In 1996, OSU's most recent Omaha appearance, the Cowboys lost to Alabama in the first round and Clemson in the second. The Cowboys have lost five straight CWS games dating to 1993.
· The Cowboys dropped to 9-14 when their opponent scores first, 2-15 when scoring five or fewer runs and 7-8 against teams ranked in the top 10 at the time of the game.
· OSU's five runs scored in the two games are the Cowboys' fewest in a CWS since 1967, when OSU lost to Arizona State 7-2 and Rider 3-1.
