STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State pitcher Matt Smith was named a first team Collegiate Baseball Preseason All-American in the newspaper's annual release today.
Smith was one of seven pitchers named to the first team and the only lefthander on the squad.
The junior hurler from Henderson, Nev., finished last season with a 9-6 ledger and a 3.09 ERA with 144 strikeouts and 44 walks. Smith posted six double digit strikeout games and twice recorded career highs of 14 K's in a game.
Smith earned second team National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's (NCBWA) All-America plaudits and was a first team All-Big 12 pick as well.
Baseball America rates Smith, who was the 1998 Big 12 Freshman of the Year, as the top lefthanded pitching prospect in collegiate baseball and the 11th best prospect overall. He is a projected first-round selection in the 2000 amateur draft and would be Oklahoma State's first first-rounder since Jeromy Burnitz was selected by the New York Mets in the 1990 draft.
Smith and outfielder Daylan Holt of Texas A&M were the only players from the Big 12 named to the first team.
