STILLWATER, Okla. - Del Miller, one of the most successful and respected coaches in the country, has been named offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State. The announcement was made Friday afternoon by head coach Bob Simmons.
Miller is a 21-year coaching veteran who has been associated with some of the most successful coaches in the most successful programs in the country. He comes to Oklahoma State from Kansas State, where he was in a second tour of duty on Bill Snyder's staff.
He was the first coach Snyder hired at Kansas State in 1989 to begin the process of building that program into one of the nation's elite. He served as Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator and also coached the quarterbacks and wide receivers during his first stint at K-State, which went from 1989 through 1995.
From 1993 to 1995, the Wildcats fashioned a 28-7-1 record and were 2-1 in bowl games. His offensive units at Kansas State were among the nation's best. The 1993 Wildcat offense generated 565 total yards against Nebraska.
Among his pupils at Kansas State were quarterback Chad May and wide receiver Kevin Lockett. Both still own many K-State passing and receiving records.
"I'm excited about coming to Oklahoma State," Miller said. "I look forward to working with Bob Simmons and the type of leadership and integrity he has brought to the program. I learned a long time ago the best way to win is to surround yourself with good people, and I'm excited about the general commitment, particularly by the president and athletics director, to moving everything forward."
Prior to rejoining Snyder at Kansas State in 1998, Miller was head coach at Southwest Missouri State. He was head coach at SMS when the Bears lost in overtime to OSU on Lewis Field. He led the Bears to three top-four conference finishes, and his team finished the 1996 season ranked 20th in the country.
In each of his last three years at SMS, his team featured a 2,000-yard passer and backs that rushed for more than 1,000 yards. His 1998 SMS team averaged 412.9 yards of total offense and 30 points per game.
"I have admired and been impressed with Del Miller for a number of years," Coach Simmons said. "He brings an incredible amount of experience and has been associated with success everywhere he has coached. He has a tremendous ability to not only organize but implement, and I look forward to having him on our staff."
Miller's coaching career began in 1978 when he served as a graduate assistant at the University of Iowa. He joined Hayden Fry's full-time staff in 1979 and remained through 1988, when he departed for Kansas State. At Iowa, Miller was part of eight straight bowl teams and two Big Ten championships.
He served as Iowa's recruiting coordinator and was involved in the recruitment of 25 players that are current or former players in the National Football League.
He earned a bachelor's degree from Central College in Pella, Iowa and a master's degree from Northern Iowa. He and his wife, Jan, have three sons, Troy (27), Todd (24) and Tad (21).
