OSU CLOSES OUT HOME SLATE WITH JAYHAWKS ? Oklahoma State makes its final 1999 appearance on Lewis Field this week as the Cowboys face Kansas. O-State heads into week No. 9 of the regular season looking to snap a three-game losing streak and build momentum for the final two games of the regular season at Baylor and at Oklahoma.
SENIOR DAY ? Just before OSU and Kansas kick off Saturday afternoon, the Cowboys will honor 28 seniors who will be making their final appearance in front of the home crowd. Included among the 28 seniors are 21 players who have spent their entire collegiate careers at OSU. These seniors and their parents will be honored in pregame ceremonies Saturday afternoon.

KICKOFF, RECORDS, ETC. ? Saturday?s game between Oklahoma State and Kansas is scheduled to kick off at 1:30 p.m. CST. Oklahoma State will carry an overall record of 3-5 and a Big 12 Conference mark of 1-4 into this week?s game. The Cowboys have not won since Oct. 9 against Texas Tech. Kansas will come to Lewis Field with an overall record of 4-6 and a league mark of 2-4. The Jayhawks, after losing three of their first four, have split their last six, winning two of their last three (Missouri and Baylor).
MORE ACTIVITIES ? In addition to Senior Day activities, Saturday will be Education Appreciation Day at Oklahoma State with special ceremonies during the game. Oklahoma State Distinguished Alumni Awards will also be given during the OSU-Kansas game.
TICKETS ? Tickets for Saturday?s home finale are available at the ticket office on North Boomer Road or by phone at (877) ALL-4-OSU. Tickets will also be available at the north and south stadium ticket booths on game day.
ONE STREAK ALREADY BROKEN ? For the first time in more than a month and just the second time since September, Oklahoma State will not be facing a nationally ranked opponent. OSU?s last three foes (Kansas State, Texas A&M and Texas) were each ranked in the Top 25. There?s more on that to follow.
TOUGH GOING ? Oklahoma State?s 1999 schedule has proven to be one of the most difficult in recent history. OSU?s five losses have come to nationally ranked teams that have a current combined record of 39-6. Kansas State (9-0), Nebraska (8-1), Mississippi State (8-0) and Texas (8-2) are each ranked in the top 10, and Texas A&M (6-3) is ranked 23rd in the Coaches? Poll this week.
LOTS OF ORANGE ? Oklahoma State had its fourth straight crowd in excess of 44,000 last week when Texas came to Lewis Field. The Cowboys drew a sellout crowd of 48,500 to the Kansas State game two weeks ago and had more than 44,000 for Texas Tech and 46,000 for Tulsa earlier in the season. Through five home games in 1999, Oklahoma State is averaging 43,785 per game. One contributor to OSU?s increased attendance in 1999 is the number of season tickets sold. Cowboy fans bought more than 31,000 season tickets this year, the second-highest number ever sold.
ON THE AIR ? Saturday?s game between Kansas and Oklahoma State will be broadcast live on the Cowboy Radio Network. Bill Teegins, Sports Director at Oklahoma City?s KWTV (channel 9), is the radio voice of Oklahoma State football and basketball. Tom Dirato, OSU?s Coordinator of Radio and Television, provides the analysis. The network broadcast will begin at 12:30 p.m. and end with live interviews from the OSU dressing room. The 30-station Cowboy Network is a division of Learfield Sports in Jefferson City, Mo. This week?s game will not be televised.
GOLEMBIEWSKI HONORED ? Oklahoma State?s senior offensive lineman Andrew Golembiewski will be honored this week as a Football Scholar Athlete by the Burger King Corporation. In honor of his outstanding athletic and academic accomplishments and his commitment to mentoring the youth of Stillwater, Burger King Corporation has donated $10,000 to the OSU general scholarship fund in his name. The award will be presented Saturday by Oklahoma-area Burger King Franchisees and accepted by OSU President Dr. James Halligan and Athletics Director Terry Don Phillips. Golembiewski is a senior who has maintained a 3.48 GPA as a secondary education major and has played a prominent role on OSU?s offensive line. He has been listed four times on the Dean?s Honor Roll and is active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Golembiewski is from Santee, Calif.
OSU LAST WEEK ? Oklahoma State began the month of November just like it ended the month of October, against a nationally ranked team from the state of Texas. The Cowboys fell behind on the first play of the game when Hodges Mitchell ran 80 yards for a UT touchdown. The Cowboys recovered and scored a game-tying touchdown with 9:33 left in the second quarter. Texas took advantage of an OSU turnover to score with 2:12 left before halftime, and the Horns scored two unanswered touchdowns early in the third. One of Texas? third-quarter scores came on a 31-yard interception return. OSU pulled within 14, 28-14, when a wide-open Terance Richardson caught a Tony Lindsay pass and raced for a 50-yard score. The Longhorns iced a win with two fourth-quarter field goals by Kris Stockton. Oklahoma State was led by Lindsay, who completed 10 of 21 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown. Tight end Marcellus Rivers and wide receiver Terance Richardson both had big days. Rivers had six receptions for 99 yards and a touchdown while Richardson had four catches for 71 yards and a touchdown.
KANSAS LAST WEEK ? While Oklahoma State was falling to Texas on Lewis Field, Kansas was rolling to a 45-10 win over Baylor in Lawrence. Running back David Winbush scored three touchdowns and rushed for more than 100 yards as the Jayhawks won for the second time in three games and handed Baylor its 11th straight Big 12 Conference loss. Kansas once again enjoyed success at home. The Jayhawks have won four out of six on the home turf but are 0-4 on the road. Two of Winbush?s touchdowns against Baylor came on his last two carries of the third quarter and gave Kansas a 24-10 lead. The Jayhawks led 31-10 with 10:14 left in the game after a 1-yard run by Moran Norris. Baylor actually led Kansas 10-7 early in the second quarter before the Jayhawks took the lead for good.
UPDATING THE 1999 OPPOSITION ? Oklahoma State?s 1999 opponents have a combined record of 57-42 going into this weekend?s play. Two of OSU?s 1999 opponents are still unbeaten after seven weeks of regular-season play.

OSU OPPONENTS RANKED ? The difficulty of Oklahoma State?s 1999 schedule is also reflected in the number of Cowboy opponents included in the national rankings. This week (Nov. 7) alone, five previous OSU opponents are ranked in the top 25 with four of those foes ranked in the top 10. According to this week?s Coaches? Poll, Kansas State is No. 5, Nebraska No. 6, Mississippi State No. 7 and Texas No. 10. Texas A&M, a 21-3 winner over OSU two weeks ago, is ranked 23rd in this week?s poll. You have to go all the way back to 1976 to find a year in which OSU faced four or more teams ranked in the top 10. That season, OSU foes Kansas (8), Oklahoma (5), Missouri (10) and Nebraska (9) were all ranked in the top 10 in the country. The 1976 season also saw the Pokes play No. 12 Arkansas and No. 14 Iowa State.
HOME STREAK STILL INTACT ? Oklahoma State successfully defended its home turf against nonconference opponents again in 1999. For the eighth straight season, the Cowboys did not lose to a nonconference opponent on Lewis Field. the Pokes will start the 2000 season with a 16-game winning streak at home against nonleague foes.

HEAD COACH BOB SIMMONS ? Oklahoma State?s head football coach is eight games into his fifth season and will be coaching his 55th OSU game when the Cowboys face Kansas this week. Coach Simmons will bring a career mark of 25-29 into Saturday?s game. Simmons came to Oklahoma State from Colorado, where he was assistant head coach for Bill McCartney. He guided OSU to a bowl game just three years into his tenure and was the 1997 Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year.
CONTRACT EXTENSION ? Earlier this season, one day before the Cowboys disposed of Tulsa on Lewis Field, the Oklahoma State Board of Regents approved a contract extension for Bob Simmons that will keep him as OSU?s head football coach through the 2005 season.

MILESTONES UNDER SIMMONS ? Oklahoma State?s football fortunes have soared since Simmons became the school?s 20th head coach on Dec. 4, 1994. Below are just a few of those milestones.
? When OSU defeated Texas Tech 41-21 this season, it was the first win over the Red Raiders since 1988, snapping a four-game losing streak.
? OSU registered its first win under Coach Simmons on Sept. 16, 1995 when the Cowboys upended Southwest Missouri State 35-7 on Lewis Field.
? When Simmons led the Cowboys to a 30-26 win over Missouri at Columbia on Oct. 21, 1995, it snapped a 20-game winless streak in conference play.
? Two weeks after defeating Missouri at Columbia, the Cowboys defeated Oklahoma at Norman. It was OSU?s first win over its in-state rival since 1976 and was a signal of things to come. O-State has defeated Oklahoma three of the four years since Simmons became head coach.
? When Oklahoma State won at Iowa State in the 1997 season opener, it would be the start of a six-game winning streak and help guide the Cowboys to their first bowl season since 1988. OSU would win its first six games of the season, including back-to-back wins over Texas and Colorado.
? Since overtime became vogue in college football in 1996, Oklahoma State has had more than its share of extra-period contests. Under Simmons, the Cowboys have gone into overtime four times, including a two-overtime thriller at Texas A&M two years ago.
? Since Bob Simmons took over the OSU reins in 1995, the Cowboys have faced 17 teams that were nationally ranked going into the game. Eight of those opponents were ranked in the top 10 whey they faced Oklahoma State. In the last two seasons, Oklahoma State has defeated three opponents (Texas and Colorado in 1997 and Mississippi State in 1998) that were nationally ranked.

The Bob Simmons Television Show airs each Sunday at 10:30 p.m. on KOCB (34) in Oklahoma City. T-RICH REACHES 1,000 ? Senior receiver Terance Richardson had another big day against Texas, and he moved into an elite group of OSU pass catchers. His 71 yards on four receptions against Texas moved him past the 1,000-yard mark for receiving yards in a career. He will go into this week?s game against Kansas 13th on the all-time OSU list with 1,067 career yards. In surpassing the 1,000-yard mark, Richardson joins a group of just 15 Cowboys to have 1,000 or more receiving yards in their career. The list is below.

FOBBS, SIMMONS ON THE CAREER LIST ? With 420 yards through eight games this season, Jamaal Fobbs now has 1,675 yards for his OSU career. He will go into this week?s game against Kansas 18th on the career rushing list. Fobbs is 256 yards behind Nathan Simmons on the OSU career rushing list. Simmons, who returned this season after major knee surgery, has 1,931 career yards and is 14th on the all-time list. He needs just 69 more yards to become the 13th player in OSU history to rush for 2,000 or more yards in a career.

RICHARDSON IS TRIPLE THREAT ? Richardson has not only proved his worth as a pass catcher but as a punt returner and even running with the football. With 380 yards on 27 returns through eight games, Richardson is already fourth on the OSU single-season punt-return yardage list. Richardson needs 15 yards to move past Jim Spavital into third 43 yards to move into second place past Bennie Goodwin and 142 yards to move past R.W. McQuarters and establish a new single-season record for punt-return yardage.

HOWELL REACHES 400 ? Senior wide receiver Ethan Howell caught two passes for 11 yards against Texas last week, but in the process, he moved past the 400-yard mark for the season. He will go into this week?s game against Kansas with 402 season receiving yards, 12 yards short of 414 which would be the 30th-best single-season receiving effort in OSU history. Hart Lee Dykes had the best-ever OSU single-season in receiving yards with 1,278 in 1988. Here?s a look at the 12 OSU receivers who have had between 400 and 500 yards in a season with their school rank in that category.

SPREADING THE WEALTH ? Through eight games of the ?99 season, Oklahoma State has had 11 different players catch at least one pass. Four of those receivers are in double-digit receptions with three games to play. Ethan Howell leads all OSU receivers with 402 yards on 27 catches. Marcellus Rivers is next with 253 yards on 21 catches with Terance Richardson (185) and Jamaal Fobbs (160) right behind.
MARCELLUS SHINES AGAINST UT ... AGAIN ? Tight end Marcellus Rivers had the second-best day of his OSU career Saturday when he hauled in six catches for 99 yards against Texas. The best day of his still-young Cowboy career came a year ago against the same Longhorns in Austin when he had three catches for 104 yards.

PORTER TOP TACKLER AGAIN ? Oklahoma State defensive back Alvin Porter continues to have a season that should warrant consideration for All-Big 12 honors. Porter has impressive numbers through eight games of the 1999 season. His 43 total tackles lead the Cowboy defense, and his 12 passes broken up are seven better than Evan Howell, who is No. 2 on the team in that category. Porter had a busy day against Texas last week, registering 11 tackles and breaking up two passes. Both totals were team bests against the Longhorns.
EDWARDS NO. 2 ? Senior defensive back Adam Edwards is having the best season of his OSU career. Through eight games, Edwards is tied for No. 2 on the team in tackles with 41. He also has three tackles for losses, one pass interception and a pair of passes broken up. His 41 total tackles so far in 1999 far surpass his previous season-best of 17 total stops in 1998.
ALL-PURPOSE FOBBS ? Tailback Jamaal Fobbs leads Oklahoma State in several offensive categories, including rushing and all-purpose yards. He also leads Oklahoma State in kickoff returns. Through eight games, Fobbs has 420 carries for 83 yards. He is averaging an impressive 5.1 yards per carry and has scored two touchdowns. He has 1,029 all-purpose yards, including 420 rushing and 449 in kickoff returns.
ON THE KICKOFF RETURN LIST ? With 56 yards on three kickoff returns against Texas last week, Fobbs now has two of the top seven single-season kickoff-return yardage totals. His 449 yards equal Dick Graham?s 1970 numbers. His 534 yards last year represent the third-best single-season OSU effort. He also has 20 returns, which equal the seventh-best single-season number.

NEXT WEEK ? Oklahoma State begins a two-game road trip that will bring the regular season to a close. The Cowboys travel to Waco to face Baylor next Saturday. Oklahoma State then travels to Norman for the regular-season finale against the Sooners. That game will kick off at 2 p.m. and be televised nationally by Fox Sports Net.

NEED DIRECTIONS? ? It?s been four years since the Kansas Jayhawks played a football game on Lewis Field. KU?s last appearance in Stillwater for a football game was Nov. 18, 1995, when the 15th-ranked Jayhawks escaped their encounter with Bob Simmons? first team with a 22-17 victory. Like this week?s game, that contest was the final home game of the season. Kansas leads the overall series by a 28-24-3 margin and had a six-game winning streak vs. OSU snapped with last year?s 38-28 Cowboy victory in Lawrence. The Jayhawks also lead the series in Stillwater, by a 13-10-2 count, and in fact, OSU has not beaten Kansas on Lewis Field since 1988, a string of four straight home losses. However, three of those four games were decided by a touchdown or less.
A STREAKY SERIES ? The OSU-Kansas series has been one of dominating streaks by both schools. Between 1923 and 1968, Oklahoma State managed only six wins in 27 tries. KU won seven straight between 1946 and 1952 and seven more between 1959 and 1965. An Oklahoma State win in 1969 at Lawrence signaled the start of a 21-year domination by the Cowboys. Between 1969 and 1989, Oklahoma State had a 17-1-3 mark vs. Kansas. But Kansas had won all six meetings in the 1990s until OSU came away with a victory last season.
LAST YEAR IN LAWRENCE ? On a scorching day in Lawrence, OSU recovered from an early 14-0 deficit to open the 1998 season with a 38-28 over Kansas. Troy West, in his first game as an OSU linebacker, produced two crucial interceptions, returning one for OSU?s second touchdown and setting up the clinching score with the second. The Cowboys gained 230 yards on the ground largely thanks to a balanced effort by Nathan Simmons (13 carries, 69 yards), Tony Lindsay (15 for 65) and Jamaal Fobbs (16 for 50) to win a game that was tied at halftime and again in the fourth quarter.
KU COACH TERRY ALLEN ? Kansas head coach Terry Allen is in his 11th season as a head coach with an overall 88-45 career mark. Allen, who entered the year averaging eight wins a season during his 10-year career, has a 13-19 mark in his third season at KU. Allen was the winningest active coach in Division I-AA when he left Northern Iowa for Kansas. He is 0-2 against Oklahoma State, in addition to last year?s OSU-KU game, Allen coached against the Cowboys when Northern Iowa lost 33-23 on Lewis Field in 1990.
SERIES SETS STAGE FOR GREAT GAMES ? OSU-Kansas games of the past have been showcases for great individual performances. Eventual Heisman Trophy winner Barry Sanders had his third-best rushing day ever in 1988 with 312 yards against the Jayhawks. Quarterback Mike Gundy?s 429-yard effort against Kansas in 1989 is still and OSU single-game best. Alex Loyd?s 16 pass receptions against Kansas in 1949 are still tops on the OSU single-game list. On the other side, Gayle Sayers had the third-best single-game rushing day in KU history in 1962, when he romped for 283 yards against Oklahoma State.

Every game of the 1999 Cowboy Football season can be heard throughout the state of Oklahoma on the Cowboy Radio Network. OSU Football will cover the state like a blanket when 30 stations join the Network, from Altus to Bartlesville, from Guymon to Idabel. KWTV Sports Director Bill Teegins returns for his ninth season as the play-by-play voice of the Cowboys, while Tom Dirato, coordinator of radio and television for the OSU Athletic Department, will provide color analysis.
