Oklahoma State Football Postgame Notes
November 13, 1999 | Cowboy Football
Nov. 13, 1999
? OSU snapped a three-game losing streak overall and ended a four-game home losing streak to the Jayhawks. The Cowboys' last victory over KU in Stillwater was a 63-24 romp in 1988.
? OSU won after trailing at the half for the first time this season in five tries.
? Senior WR Terance Richardson returned 6 punts today for 140 yards. His 60-yard return in the third quarter, which tied his career long, moved him past Benny Goodwin for the school career record. He now has 520 yards in punt returns this season, just one yard shy of the single-season school record of 521 set by McQuarters in 1997, and 832 in his career, besting the previous career mark of 787 that Goodwin set during 1967-69. Richardson had returns of 19, 44 and 60 yards today, giving him 12 returns this year of over 15 yards and nine over 30 yards. The 60-yarder tied his season and career high. Ironically, Richardson is the best career punt returner in OSU history but has no punt-return touchdowns in his career.
? Junior TB Jamaal Fobbs' 53-yard first-quarter run was his sixth run of more than 20 yards this season and his ninth play over 20 yards overall. His long gainer this year was a 68-yard touchdown run against Louisiana-Lafayette.
? When OSU was held to a first-quarter field goal after having first-and-goal on the KU 2-yard line, it marked the first time this year (in 12 tries) that the Cowboys were held scoreless in a goal-to-go situation.
? Freshman DB Chris Massey blocked a first-quarter Kansas punt, and sophomore DB Marcus Jones returned it 17 yards for OSU's first touchdown of the game. The last time OSU blocked a punt for a touchdown was Oct. 1, 1994, when Jeroid Johnson blocked and Johnny Jones returned in a victory over North Texas. OSU's last punt block came last season against Mississippi State, when Dwayne Levels rejected a Bulldog offering. OSU had one other punt block last season ? Levels also blocked a punt last season against Kansas.
? Senior FB Kevin Brown, who came into today's game with seven carries for 26 yards this season, rushed 10 times today for 45 yards.
? Senior TE Garret Steggs' third-quarter pass reception for a touchdown was the first TD catch of his career. It was just his second pass reception of the season.
? Freshman LB Kevin Williams recorded his first career touchdown when he picked up a third-quarter Kansas fumble in the end zone. It was OSU's third defensive touchdown this season, earlier this season, senior LB Kenyatta Wright recovered a Tulsa fumble for a score, and senior DL Cortney Mallory picked off a Mississippi State pass and returned it for a touchdown.
? Senior WR Ethan Howell's 36-yard touchdown catch on the first play of the fourth quarter was his third touchdown catch this season and the seventh of his career. All have gone for over 20 yards.
? Senior TB Nathan Simmons' fourth-quarter touchdown plunge was his third TD run this season and the 11th of his career.
? OSU scored 35 points in the second half, the most in a single half since a 38-point outburst in the first half against Southwest Missouri State in 1993. OSU had not scored 35 points in a second half since the 1988 Holiday Bowl victory over Wyoming, when the Cowboys outscored the Cowboys 45-7 in the second period.
