PONCA CITY, Okla. - Oklahoma State Wrestling opened the 1999-2000 campaign with its annual ranking match tonight at the Ponca City High School Gym in Ponca City, Okla.
The Orange team came out on top by a score of 28-10.
One upset highlighted the match as redshirt freshman Jerrod Sanders decisioned senior Jamill Kelly, 3-1, in the 141 pound match.
"I saw a lot of good thing, but we're going to have to have some patience this season," said Head Coach John Smith. "I thought Jerrod Sanders wrestled well tonight. Jamill Kelly is very tough. He had a very good preseason and one of the things Sanders did was stay on the offense. By staying on the offense he won the match."
Mark Mu?oz earned the starting nod at 197 with a 21-6 technical fall over Todd Munson in 5:48. Charles Walker moves down to 133-pound weight class this season and decisioned John Thompson, 4-2 to earn the starting spot. At 125, fifth-year senior Jeff Ragan decisioned Matt Brown, 7-3.
Returning All-American Reggie Wright showed why he is ranked in the top three in the nation at 149 with a 22-7 technical fall over Jeff Ruberg in a time of 4:36. Redshirt freshman Shane Roller will start the 1999-2000 season as the starter at 157 with a major decision win over Casey Dalton, 15-5.
