STILLWATER, Okla. - The Cowgirls will travel to Champaign, Illinois, this weekend to participate in the NCAA Midwest Regional Cross Country Championship.
Oklahoma State is just one of the 29 schools that will compete in Saturday's 5K race, which is scheduled to begin at noon. Other schools from the Big 12 include: Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma. The race will take place on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Blue Golf Course.
"It's going to be a competitive race," said Coach Catrina Acosta. "The Big 12 Championship was a big meet because the Big 12 has so many good teams this year. Nebraska, Kansas State and Missouri are some of the teams from our conference that we hope to beat, but there are going to be many other schools as well."
Acosta said she is looking forward to taking her "young team" to Districts, simply to see how the girls will react to the competition.
"The Big 12 meet stunned so many of my new girls. And this meet is going to be so much bigger. It is a positive thing for them to get to experience this.
"I don't have any expectations. I have a very young team this year. I expect Hanna (Smedstad) will run well. Shavon (Young) has been really motivated and that really excites me. Sara (Wells) is poised to make a good jump as well. It will be a good race," Acosta said.
